Oh Valda, tears of joy are flowing at this moment. For so long my great, great grandmother, Rachel, has just been a name to me. Wow, this is amazing – thank you so much for finding her baptism/parents, some of her family and a new county or two to explore - I’m still trying to take it all in.

You’ve found the link to Rachel through the baptism entries for Mary Ann’s Peach cousins. This is wonderful. I noticed that Rachel’s sister, Mary Vickers (married to John Peach) died aged 50 in 1834. Rachel and she were probably very close in age.

Then there is Jane, married to John Frier who is almost certainly another sister, hopefully, she lived long enough to appear on some censuses……and that also means that my great grandfather, William had a sister, Mary Ann, and cousins Thomas, Marianne and Edward.

Finally, there is baby John, born to Rachel, who died so young…. how sad.

The name Viccars et al, certainly has many variations. Rachel could not write - she signed her marriage register with her mark. The witnesses to her marriage to Benjamin in 1819 were James Viccars, who signed his name and James Taylor. Benjamin died in 1835, there is an MI for him in Charterhouse Chapel burials……. Benjamin Matthews, husband of Rachel Matthews, a housemaid to the Charterhouse, 58 years. In 1841 census, Rachel was enumerated as a retired house servant, living in Charterhouse, East London nbic. Maybe that was why 15 year old Mary Ann was living with Thomas in 1841. On William’s baptism entry, Benjamin’s occupation was housekeeper so it all ties in. Up until a few days ago this was all I knew about Benjamin and Rachel and now........

Thank you so much Valda, this is just perfect.

Hugs,
Margaret  :D

Hello Margaret

I hope you are still posting.  I am new to roots chats and I found William Lea Matthews name through a google search which lead me to your postings.  William Lea Matthews is my GG Grandfather I'm a descendant of  Lillias Ida Matthews and Sydney Whitworth if you haven't got this line of family.  I would be happy to fill you in.

Hello Margaret

I am new to Roots Chat and I was delighted to see your investigations into Benjamin Matthews.  I too am related to him (and you I suppose!).   My information through the censuses shows a Benjamin Matthews as a Postmaster in Burford Oxfordshire who retired to Stow on the Wold.  He married Rebecca and they had seven children:  Sarah, Benjamin, George, Walter, Ann, Amelia and Stephen.

If this is indeed the same Benjamin Matthews it would be great to talk to you.  My own Great Great Grandfather was Walter.

Best Wishes
Andy

Hi AndySV,

Just found your post after replying to Margaret on  a related post.

Walter is also my great, great grandfather and I follow the line from him through 3 William Lewis Matthews's. Thankfully my mother decided to call me Mike!!

I'd love to hear from you and follow up some more of the family history.

Cheers, Mike.

Hello Mike

Great to meet you!  I assume your/our Walter married Isabella Patterson Green? and their son (your descendant) was William born in St Pancras in 1858?

Walter stayed in the family name right up to my late Uncle who died in 1972.   Walter's son William was brother to Pickering who was my ancestor.  Pickering had a son called Walter and his son was my Uncle.

Any info you have or you want please let me know.  Margaret Williams on here has been a mine of information and has traced the Matthews clan back to around 1750.

Best Wishes.
