Strange transcription

This is just a little encouragement for those struggling to find an ancestor. 

I'm researching the Reverend Jeremiah Wheate b.1646 Coventry . . . desperately trying to prove a suggestion that my 7th gt.grandfather, Samuel Wheate, was his son.

The IGI entry, which I have only just found by browsing the entire collection for Deddington, Oxfordshire shows a Samuel, son of Jeremiah, Chr. 15 Mar 1680.

His father is transcribed as: JEREMIAH WHEATELLICAR  [ Jeremiah Wheate - Vicar  ]

So, never trust a transcription, and if all else fails, browse page by page . . . I've done a similar thing many times with the census because those Ancestry transcribers don't know the quirky spelling of your ancestor's name, and make an educated [or uneducated] guess.

Of course, I still don't know if this is my Samuel, but it's a step nearer.

I had a similar situation but much later circa 1800. I was looking for my 3 x grt grandmother Elizabeth Jones and found a very interesting one in an index - Elizabeth Smith. Father, Evan Jones Smith. 

The original record was much clearer. Evan Jones was a Blacksmith

I found my maternal grandmother who was born in 1890 listed as being 9yrs old on the 1891 census transcription.The mistake was caused by those written slash lines! one had been put just below the 0,and looked like the age was 9.It would not occur to the transcriber that anything was amiss so I forgave them, they are doing a sterling job on the whole.

I think that I may have found an ancestor (with many thanks to another member of this site). I have been searching for many years for my ancestor Charles Welch born Maidstone c1804. I now think that the IGI has him down as Charles Welchgray son of William and Jane (?Gray).  I am off to the S.O.G to prove (or disprove)  that this is another brickwall that may come down soon.

I always though with 15 years of FH experience that I knew what to expect. I now know just to expect the unexpected. I suppose that there is a moral here somewhere.

Someone on here found my relative Jedidah Betsworth transcribed on a parish record as J. D. Diar Betsworth.
So yes, never trust a transcription absolutely.
