You've got him Grub !!  :D

I can't find him on any others though !!  :-\ a possible on 1841 ..... !!

IF he was in the Charge of the Light Brigade .... he would be in the army and the Crimean War in the 50's and maybe 60's .... then I believe the regiment went to Ireland which is where he probably met Margaret !!

He went to America in 1888 .... and we have him after that ... with no mention of the war until his notice of death in the paper .... if I can find his grave ... it may say something on that !!

 - here's some info on the Richard Harling in the 4th Light Dragoons.

- born about 1826 in Kendall, brother James in New Padford Nottinghamshire, name also given as 'Harding'.

Place is probably RADFORD, there is a James there in 1861 with his family and a brother John, aged 26, born Kindal (Kendal)... red herring or not?

Thanks Jorose ... I had seen that .... but as he was the only Harling on the list ... I wondered if it might be him !! :-\

I have come across so many old soldiers who came to America ( mostly for the Civil War ) and said they were part of the Light Brigade ... even said it on their headstones but I can't find them listed ........ unless they changed their names !!

Lawrence Crider has another Harling ... I just found him ...... !! but not ours I don't think !! :-\

Harling, Pte Joseph, (1881), 4th LD Bn in Craven [56-4-24]. Enl 02-03-55 [56-4-24]. Prior Occ: Butcher [56-4-24]. Joined Regt 09-01-55 [55-3-5]. ...

and Craven is in Yorkshire  ::) ::) ::)

Not sure where to go with this notation, Annie

http://broncgeeks.billings.k12.mt.us/complang/tih/TODAY.JAN

Search for Harling, using Edit/Search feature

Says John was the last survivor??

Incidentally, I found them in the 1900 census listed as 'Harland'. They are in Quincy City (can be seen at http://search.labs.familysearch.org/ )  Not too much extra info other than that John and Margaret had been married 25 years.
