PrueM 'Second Chance' Scavenger Hunt. Everybody Welcome To Join In.
« on: Tuesday 15 April 08 12:44 BST (UK) »

Welcome to this weeks Scavenger Hunt and this week it's PrueM's turn.   As you'll notice, Prue already has her people in all the census, so at least it saves on some searches.   I do believe you'll find this one very interesting.

Good Luck and Good Hunting.

Barbara

                               ***********************
I would like help tracing the parents and origins of my 3xg-grandparents, Joseph INGRAM and Caroline MORRISH.  All the pertinent information I have (I think!) is below, except to say that I do have them and their children on every census - but if you have a question, just ask, I may  have the info hidden in the back of my brain somewhere but not written it down.

Here is the information from my family tree:

Joseph Henry INGRAM. Born in Woodlands, Dorset, on 2 Apr 1811.
He was christened in Poole Wesleyan Chapel, Dorset, on 29 Apr 1811.
Joseph Henry died in Camberwell, on 12 May 1881; he was 70.
Cause of death: Cancer Of The Face, 2 Yrs 6 Months; Exhaustion.
He was buried in Camberwell Old Cemetery, on 21 May 1881.
Occupation: 1847 - Clerical And Scholastic Agent; 1853 -Teacher Of Languages; 1857 - Professor of Languages; etc.

Abt 1835 when Joseph Henry was 23, he married Caroline MORRISH, daughter of William MORRISH & Caroline CANNON. Born on 23 Mar 1811.
She was christened in St Luke Old Street, Finsbury, London, on 24 Nov 1812.
Caroline died in 2 Oxford Villas, 32 Linden Grove, Camberwell (Nunhead), on 7 Oct 1884; she was 73.
She was buried in Camberwell Old Cemetery, on 14 Oct 1884.
Cause of death: Ague, 15 Years; Debility.

They had the following children:
Caroline Mathilda, 1835, Morlaix, France
Emilie Lucy, 1837, Morlaix, France
Matilda, abt 1839, France
Caroline Josephine, abt 1842, France
George, abt 1845, France
Josephine, abt 1846, France
Joseph Herbert Henry, 1847, Islington
Alfred, abt 1850, Twickenham
Augustus, abt 1852, Hounslow
Edward Charles, 1853, Heston
Arthur, abt 1855, Hounslow

Assumptions:

Joseph Henry INGRAM is the son of George INGRAM and Ann ANDREWS, who married on 6 Dec 1808 in Horton with Woodlands, Dorset.  They had a son called Joseph baptised at Poole Wesleyan Chapel in 1811.

Caroline MORRISH is the daughter of William MORRISH and Caroline CANNON - they had a daughter born in 1811, christened in Finsbury, London in 1812.

Joseph and Caroline married in France.

Things to bear in mind:

Joseph gives his birthplace as "Woodlands, Dorset" in 1851 and 1861, and thereafter as "Bath, Somerset".  His brother, Samuel Frederick, states he was born in Bath.  No record found of his birth/baptism.

Caroline MORRISH consistently gives her birthplace as "Chelsea, Middlesex".

Family stories say the family were Catholic...no real evidence for that though.

We have a photographic copy of an old engraving showing someone supposedly connected to the INGRAM family - it has "Sidney George ingram" written on the back, but no trace of such a person has yet been found.  He bears a striking resemblance to a photograph we have of  Joseph Ingram, so could it be his father or another brother we don't know about?

Any help would be worshipfully received!!!

Hi Deb, have you tried Pallots?

Hi Prue

at some point in history the Catholics of this Country went to France to escape the Protestant overhaul but i think that this was Elizabeth 1 time so way before the era you are looking at but there may be some truth in the Catholic rumor, and on your last hunt you had people from ireland that were catholic too, so don't discount it ....... yet1

Hi all   :D :D :D

Great to see you are all on the trail already!!

One thing I neglected to mention is that Joseph and Caroline were (obviously) in France (Brittany - Morlaix and probably Brest) between at least 1835 and 1847.  In 1861 Joseph's census entry states that he is a "graduate of the University of France".  He was a teacher of languages and mathematics all his life.  So I'm assuming that he went to France around 1830 to study.

I have contacted the Sorbonne (one of the universities that used to make up the old University of France) but they couldn't find any records for Joseph.  I don't know whether that means they looked and couldn't find one, or whether their records don't go back that far.

THe fact that he went to France to study might lend weight to the Catholic theory, don't you think?  From memory I think the English universities were closed to Catholics until the late 19th century...?

Hi Pru and toni and Barbara  ;D

in 1851
they have a daughter , Maria 15 b France  ...Is she Caroline Mathilda?

deb

Hi Deb  :)  Yes, Caroline Mathilda called herself Maria.  Believe me, this caused us no end of anguish in the early days of searching!!

I guess the one main thing I'd like to try to do is prove, or disprove, the links of my Caroline and Joseph to Caroline Cannon Morrish and Joseph Ingram from Poole.

Thanks for all your interest and help so far!  :D
