Mcturk family from Glasgow
« on: Tuesday 29 April 08 20:16 BST (UK) »
I am looking for information on McTurks from Glasgow.  My great grandfather, John McTurk, worked for the railroad and married Mathilda Brady in the 1880's.  Eventually all of the surviving children became wards of Quarrier's and emigrated to Canada.
I am looking for information on John McTurk's family.
-Buckingham family, Buckinghamshire, England to Russell, Ontario, Canada
-Catherine Connell McTurk who came to Canada in 1913 but repatriated to Scotland and married David Paton in Uddingston in 1927 and who had one daughter, Margaret Brown Paton born Dec. 8, 1929
-Sheldrick family of Eastern Ontario, Canada
-Cooper family, from Cooper's Hill, Co. Tipperary to Ottawa area, Ontario, Canada

Hi Bucks

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

What information do you have on John.  Have you details from the 1880s marriage cert. which would include details of his parents and age. Have you found John and Matilda in the later censuses?

Regards.

This looks like them in the 1901 census:

John McTurk 38, railway porter, b. Glasgow
Matilda McTurk    35, b. Glasgow
Elizabeth McTurk 4
Matilda McTurk    3
Catherine McTurk 1

Address: 103 Rose St, Glasgow Govan

The marriage looks to have been in 1893 in Kinning Park, Glasgow.

It would look like his age has been mis transcribed on the index I am looking at for the census in 1901. This is John's birth entry: John MCTURK born 15 MAR 1871 Hutchesontown, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland

His parents John MCTURK and Catherine CONNELL were married on 15 JUL 1870 at Central District, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland. Some census entries for them:

1871:
John McTurk 27, railway stoker, b. Minnigton, Dumfrieshire
Catherine McTurk 22, b. Glasgow
John McTurk, under 1 month, b. Glasgow

Address: 12 Camden St, Hutchesontown, Glasgow Govan

1881:
John McTurk 37, Railway Engine Driver, b. Moniaive (?spl), Dumfriesshire
Catherine McTurk 32, b. Glasgow
John McTurk 10, b. Glasgow
Robert McTurk 8, b. Glasgow
Jessie McTurk 5, b. Glasgow
James A McTurk    3, b. Glasgow
Alexander McTurk 1, b. Glasgow

Address: 191 Caledonia Rd, Glasgow Hutchesontown

1891:
John McTurk 46, Railway Engine Driver, b. Meniaine, Dumfriesshire
Catherine McTurk 42
John McTurk    20, Railway Engine Stoker
Robert McTurk    18
Jessie McTurk    15
James McTurk    13
Alexander McTurk 11
Jane McTurk    8
Catherine McTurk 4
Isabella McTurk 2
David McTurk    5 Months

Address: 191 Caledonia Rd, Glasgow Hutchesontown

On Matilda's side, this looks to be her birth entry. To parents Charles Brady and Elizabeth Armstrong:

MATILDA ARMSTRONG BRADIE Birth on 17 SEP 1866 Anderston, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland

Charles Brady looks to have died and wife Elizabeth shows as remarried to an Alexander Robertson (although I can't easily see an entry for the marriage).  This looks to be Matilda with mother in 1881 (I can't easily see them in the 1871 index):

Alexander Robertson 42, shirt maker, b. Glasgow
Elizabeth Armstrong Robertson 40, b. Govan
Matilda Robertson 14
Marion Robertson 11
Margaret Robertson 7
Elizabeth Robertson 4

Address: 47 Hospital St, Glasgow Gorbals

I think Elizabeth Armstrong's second husband might have been called Andrew Robertson rather that Alexander. There is a marriage in Glasgow for a couple with these names.

Elizabeth Armstrong Birth: About 1841 in Ireland
Parents:David Armstrong and Jane Hunter
Marriages:Andrew Robertson on 19 OCT 1869 Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland

There are also the following children showing as born to this couple

1. MARION ROBERTSON  Birth: 04 SEP 1870 Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
2. ELIZABETH ARMSTRONG ROBERTSON Birth: 24 AUG 1873 Hutchesontown, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
3. MARGARET ROBERTSON Birth: 24 AUG 1873 Hutchesontown, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
4. ELIZABETH STEWART ROBERTSON Birth: 19 OCT 1876 Hutchesontown, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland

These births fit with that 1881 census entry I posted.

Also this looks to be mother Elizabeth in 1891

Elizabeth Robertson 45, shirt maker, b. Ireland
Elizabeth Robertson 15, shirt maker, b. Glasgow
Charles Boyle    21, tinsmith, b. glasgow
Margaret Boyle (Robertson)18, wife, b. Glasgo

Address: 47 Hospital St, Glasgow Gorbals

Matilda's 1866 birth cert would confirm the date and place of her parents, Charles and Elizabeth's marriage. There are two marriages showing in Scotland in 1859 and 1860 for couples with these names (but if Charles was Irish the marriage could well have taken place in Ireland).

Matilda Brady McTurk looks to have died in 1904, Hutchenstown, Glasgow. John McTurk lived until 1949 and does not look to have remarried.
