relocation of Research Room, Register Office, Dublin
« on: Thursday 22 November 07 15:00 GMT (UK) »
The research room upstairs in Joyce House, Lombard Street is closing today and will reopen in a new location on Tuesday 27th November at
Block 7
Irish Life Centre,
Lower Abbey Street,
Dublin 1.

This is where the index books are available for perusal of births, marriages and deaths from 1864 onwards.  Once you have found a reference, a copy of the actual register entry can be obtained.  Hopefully the new premises will have more room for researchers as the room was often closed when fully occupied.  Better still it would be great if they could make available digital  records and make searching easier.

The new premises is on the north side of the river Liffey, not far from O'Connell Street.  It will be a handier location for some but not for others.

Anne

PS and when will we get to see the digital version of the censuses (1901 snd 1911) , long promised??

Annie,

Regarding your postscript; I've been wondering the same! After several broken promises the last promise was  'autumn'.
Well, now we're in mid-November, and as December is surely winter we've only two weeks to wait!

Fingers crossed,
Leofric

(Not that I'm impatient or anything...)

Thanks for that Anne - definitely not handier for me  :(  I used to be able to nip in there on the way to work some days (parked right outside).

And yes, I'm also waiting excitedly for the censuses to come online - I check the National Archives of Ireland website regularly for news but so far...nothing!

Where did you get the information re the relocation of GRO in Dublin?  I am due to visit soon and their website still states their location as at Joyce House?!

Notice in main newspaper two weeks ago.  I first heard of it in the spring at a lecture about the census. The staff seem not to know much about.  The HQ apparantly in Roscommon did not know.  I will head in soon I think and check it out before the deluge of interest generated by release of census this week hits the place.

Thanks Annie,

I'm so glad you posted to advise. Seems they might want to keep it quiet!! I'm off there tomorrow so will save me wasting time.  Will let you know how the new set up compares.

Has anyone visited the new set up in Abbey Street yet?  Any advice? do we need to put stuff in locker or is it same type of arrangement as in Joyce house.

I hope to get in tomorrow and will report back if need be!

Anne
