Hi Adrian,

It would appear that Janet's maiden name was Kelly. the IGI (www.familysearch.org) has extracted entries for the birth of son Matthew, 16th June 1815  Kirkcowan, and Patrick* 15th December 1813, Kirkcowan.
That might help you find a marriage.

[Presuming the people in the census are the correct Matthew and Janet]

*Patrick and Peter were frequently interchangable names.

I would love to help more but the IGI won't load any pages for me now  ???

Hi Adrian,
Matthew and Jean  (Kelly) Broadfoot had a daughter christened 30 Sept 1819 Old Luce.
On the 1841 census she is a female servant aged 20 at Cothouse, Old Luce, also there is John Cloy apprentice joiner aged 15.
They married at Old Luce 4 August 1842 and had the following children
Robert     C: 21 Nov 1842 Old Luce
John        C: 22 Apr 1844 Old Luce
Jane        C: 4   Jan 1846 Old Luce
Elizabeth C: 20 Jun 1847 Old Luce
I cannot find either on the 1851 census
Hope this helps
Regards

 hi beannie.

it seems to work-what you suggested-however

1.  i have the household members as:

     agnes BROADFOOT      42
     janet  BROADFOOT       77
     matthew BROADFOOT   76
     matthew BROADFOOT   34

elisabeth CLOY  3  (STATED AS MATTHEW'S gggrandlaw)
     jean/jane CLOY  5
     john  CLOY         7
     robert  CLOY      8

should be also

THEN we have MARGARET MURCHIE 23 as his Granddaughter.

and another entry for a ELISABETH DODDS 1  BORN 1850
which  possibly i think belongs to margaret
as there wouldn't be two elisabeth's in the same
family although by age they could.
however it doesnt account for margaret having the last
name MURCHIE being matthews granddaughter  and with
child called DODDS.-DID AGNES MARRY A  MURCHIE and
then married a DODDS to get elisabeth DODDS .

cheers adrian
