Active again - Brewin / Warner
« on: Tuesday 14 October 08 12:30 BST (UK) »
My family has always stated that my great Aunt Clara Annie Warner (b1875 Leicester) who married Joseph Irvin Brewin (1872 Leicester) emigrated to Canada. They married in 1894 in Leicester and possibly travelled after 1901. However I can find no record of travel to Canada using Ancestry.co.uk
Can anyone help me find something to prove that this family story is true. My family also has links with South Africa, USA and Australia but I have also found no results for these countries either.

Many thanks - Framesmiths1816

It looks like Clara was a home girl sent to Canada in 1908 through Dr. Barnado's.

You will also find Clara b 1898 living as a domestic in Hastings County in the 1911 census.

Can see the family on 1901 census with another daughter Winninfred who appears to die 1918. Do you have the 1901?

Oooo, now that is interesting!

There is another family tradition that a group of children were put into a children's home by a second wife. The only person left in our family who new these people is 88 and she is a little muddled. She had told us that this story was about the parents of Clara (b1875) but we found no evidence for this. These little bits information make it look like the story should attributed to Joseph and Clara's children. I will look for a second marriage for Joseph and a death for Clara in the UK. Obviously as the mother and the daughter had the same name my Aunt must have confused the two generations.

I don't think I have the 1901 census, as I have been looking outside of the UK and I probably dismissed it if I saw it.

Many thanks for this.

Hi Tazzie,

Looks about right doesn't it. I think the second J should be an I but his father was also Joseph and I have it in mind that Joseph jnr had used another name at some point but I cannot remember where I had seen this.

I think there are too many similarities for this to be the wrong family.

My Aunt maintains that it was more than one child that was put in the childrens home. I wonder how many and who the others were?

Thanks

The link I posted about is the Home Children Database at Library and Archives Canada.

If you know the names of other children, you could search and see if they were sent here as well.

I will have to check with my Aunt but I think there was maybe 3 children. Winifred could be one and the other(s) I don't know. As I understand it, only Clara was sent to Canada, but I am not certain.  What was a 'Home Girl' exactly?
