Hello Sandy.

This look like it is his death registered in South Australia ......

Frederick Abraham JONES aged 22 died 14th Mar 1882 at Anchorage, St Vincent Gulf
lived Liverpool England
ref = PtA S 117/465

Looks to me like he was  a seaman.

Hi Sandy,
Little bit of information from the Biographical Index of Sth Australia.  This index is not always accurate but a good place to start:-
JONES Fredk Abraham:  died 14.3.1882 arrived by 1876 on the ship George Shotton.

Sashar

Thank you both.

Much appreciated.

Is there any way to pick him on the Ships list at all.

Might be able to do so if I ever have time to spend at various places in Adelaide, Sandy....such as the Maritime Museum, the State Library, SAGHS, and the State Archives.

But goodness knows when that would ever be unfortunately.

He is too early for FindMyPast and too late for the Passengers Lists that have been put together up to 1851.

Wish I could give you more help......  :-\

Sandy....an idea......

you could contact the State Library of South Australia using http://www.slsa.sa.gov.au/site/page.cfm?area_id=15&nav_id=553
and the web-based contact link for research, and see if they can help you , as you have the Biographical Index of South Australia reference that Sashar found and have the possible name of the ship.

They may be able to help.

Just another thought:-
Does the "S" symbol of his death record mean that there is more information on the original certificate?
If so, would a copy of the certificate or a transcript from SAGHS be of help?

I'm pretty sure that the S means that he died at sea.

My interpretation is that he died while the ship he was on was at anchorage in St Vincent's Gulf. Maybe he was a seaman on one of the many coastal vessels at that time.

I did check all the online death indexes for the UK that I can access for those who died at sea, but he didn't show up.

Hi dee,
I checked out the "S" symbol and we are both right.   It does mean there is more information such as death at sea, unusual death etc or it can just mean length of residence, previous residence etc. is on the certificate.
So there may or may not be more info, the "S" could be there because his usual place of residence was Liverpool.
The likelihood of him being a sailor is pretty high. The Bisa's "arrival by 1876" makes me wonder if he resided here for a while and maybe worked on ships in local ports etc.   There is Google reference to the ship "George Shotton" being in NZ.
