Posting for Welshlinks 1
« on: Sunday 02 November 08 10:26 GMT (UK) »

Could anyone assist in dating  more accurately,
or providing other information that will assist me.

A WW I private that I know was taken in Llangefni, Anglesey.
I don't know the date but suspect 1915

Many thx

Yep,early WW1.Unfortunately he doesn't have any insignia so unable to give more info.
If you have his details you can look for a medal card etc.

Hi Jim1

I thought as much and thanks for the confirmation!  Unfortunately, the picture is all I have.  It surfaced amongst a collection of other photos accumulated by my grandmother that I rediscovered and of which I'm trying to make some sense from a genealogical perspective.  The background of the WW I soldier photo is exactly the same as that for a photo taken of my father in 1922 which was apparently taken in Llangefni.
I have no direct evidence, other than the fact that my father's Weslh bible, shows it was presented to one William Roberts who was subsequently raised as a Thomas in Canada.  It could be that the WW I photo of the private is my real paternal grandfather.  A possible connection is to one James Harrison Roberts, Welsh Fusiliers, killed in action, The Somme, July 3 1916.  He was aged 35 years.  In my opinion, the photo displayed is not one of a person aged 18 to 25 say!  At this stage, I have not yet approached the research unit of the Fusiliers in Caernarvon largely due to my uncertainty of how best to approach them.  Any advice on this would be appreciated.
Cheers

It seems in the photo that his left hand might be missing? Perhaps he was wounded and invalided out of the service?

Blimey how did we miss that.Looks like his forearm as well so that would push this to 1915.

Hi All

The uploaded image of the WW I private is not of the best quality - too many shadows under the right arm that hides his left hand which is visible on the original photo I have.  good effort and thinking though :-))

Hi All

Any ideas about the '627B' at right angles to Post Card on the reverse side of the image?
