COMPLETED - Elizabeth Anne CRABB (Exeter 1850)
« on: Monday 15 December 08 10:45 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Does anyone have any links to Eliza? She married Hugo Francis Hawkins, a cook in the RN on HMS Himalaya in 1862 in Plymouth. They settled in Portsea and had Francis, Kate and Ada ((1878, Ada died at 18). This means she was very young when they married.

Kate married Charles Fletcher (my g-parents) in 1901.

From the census data I see a large pocket of the Crabb famliy in the Bridport area ... was this a branch which moved up to Exeter?

Any help or pointers would be very helpful.

Thanks

Rob

assuming you have her on a census - whats her vital stats - and do you want her tracked back to parents etc pre marriage ?

I notice that you interchanged Eliza and Elizabeth - so this may well be her pre-marriage ?

Richard Taylor 31  Lodger

Added: No IGI for Samuel Crabb in Colyton, only a chap in Tarrington a bit older (1816) ... a 'submitted' record shows a marriage to a Sarah in Ottery St Mary in 1841, and refns the 1816 Tarrington Samuel - I think some verification would be needed, or the 1851 / 1841 might help ...

This civil record of a marriage looks better - given its in Exeter, just before the kids were born ..

1851 confirms our man is a bit older than he said in 1861 - and indeed from Tarrington ..

HO107/1882; Folio: 49; Page: 1 - Devonport, Stoke Dameral

Samuel Crabb 35  Head Labourer Devon, Tarrington
Sarah Crabb 30  Wife Ottery St Mary
Elisabeth Crabb 9 dau Exeter
John Crabb 6  son do
William Crabb 4  son  Devonport
Louisa Crabb 1  dau do

the IGI has no batches for Tarrington, so the original PRs would need to be sought out - doubtless others on here have access or ideas ...

Hi,

I was surprised there were no kids before Francis ...

The Marriage is definitely 1862 ... but, maybe he was "at sea" for a while ... this was the time of various "wars".

I saw the Colyton one ... I was checking through the various Hawkins births, and matching up any "early" deaths,
with the assumption that perhaps they lost a number of their first children (always possible).

The census records always say Eliza, but I was reckoning that perhaps before that she would have been listed as Elizabeth.

I don't seem to be able to find that 1861 record you have? Very strange ... I am using GR (not Ancestry) ... hmm ...

By 1891, it seems that Francis Hawkins has a new partner ?

Cant see a death record for Eli* in the immediate area tho - nor a 'new' marriage ...

Hi

Yes, this OLIVE is a strange one ... I looked at the original and I think it's a transcription error. But, it looks much more like ALICE, definitely not Eliza or Olive.

So, did Eliza (nee Crabb) die? I have not found another MC for Hugo (or maybe he was going by Francis then).

I find this very confusing now ... so, were Francis, Kate and Ada from Eliza? Or do we have a new maternal line to chase?

And how come Francis now says he was born Plymouth not Ireland (see 1881)

And why can I not find RG9/1440 on GR ... I find RG9/1442 which has a different Elizabeth Crabb ... hmm ... should I fire a message to them about missing data?

My brain hurts, again!
