Scranton, Pennsylvania City Directory, 1882-1885

Brocklebank, James, lab bds, 160 Sumner Ave.

I just don’t see this guy in 1910 or 1930.  It’s late here, so I’ll have another try tomorrow or maybe someone else can find him.

Dear Erato,
Many thanks.......that's a wonderful find......what's a lab dbs?
Just had a look at this address in Google street maps.......the street is filled with big old houses which is probably where he boarded.

Cheers
Susie

Dear Erato,
That sounds like it would fit if he is later listed as a miner.

Many thanks

Siouxsie

I had a look at the Scranton directory and from other entries with different occupations I think the  bds  means  boards as in a boarder in the household.

Did any other Brocklebank family members immigrate?

I can't find James on the 1910 or 1930 either...but will keep looking.

Dear Dollylee,
Many thanks for the boarder information.

None of James' family made their way to America, but his sister migrated to Australia and visited James when she went back to England and then returned to Australia (not sure if it was the forward or return trip that she and her husband visited James).

Cheers

I easily found the family in the 1871 English Census but after that they seemed to have scattered.  I couldn't find James in the 1881 English Census and only Isabella with a different place of birth.

This brought up the thought that maybe some of the older children had emigrated.

Dear Dollylee,
By 1881 Margaret had already married and was in Australia. A relative sent me an email saying "In 1881 census James was living in Carkettle with his parents along with his sisters children (Lilley and Henry)"........I haven't been able to verify this as yet. As to the other children's whereabouts I am unsure. I do know that James (the father) died in 1885 and mother Margaret (nee Woodward) died in 1904.

Hope this is of some help.

Cheers

lab would = laborer.  bds = boards  (Oops, I guess Dollylee covered that already.)

The California Death Index has two James Brocklebanks who were younger than the one you're looking for, one of whom died in Los Angeles, so I suspect one of them might have been the one in the voter registrations.
