sorry a totally random questino as I am new to roots.   not sure how it works.   my main question is whether most people discussing thigns in roots are doing their own research by signing up/paying to an online genealogy search engine.  I know you wouldn't reccommend any particular one, but is this how one does it?   and also chats on the roots forums?

from personal experience I find it depends where your ancestors are from
Many of mine are Irish and many of the Irish records were destroyed and therefore the paid sites have little to offer. However for UK based relatives some have been very useful and the investment worth while.

I would suggest you ask some of your unanswered questions in the correct forum areas here and see what replies you receive. This will help tell if there are free sites to look in or where is best.

My ancestry has Gypsy origins and some of the topics covered have already got me passed a major sticking point (i.e. the interchangeable nature of some Gypsy names).

Thanks.

:)This is a very good free site with lots of friendly people prepared you help if they can.  I have many brick walls - I am sure most of you do too. Sooner or later they will be broken down.......
