SANFORD/SANDFORD Immigration
« on: Friday 01 May 09 10:17 BST (UK) »
My ancestor Annie Rogers married Henry San(d)ford in London in Feb 1858.

They were in Sydney by 1859 as they had 3 kids there,Mary Emma Sanford b 1859 Sarah Annie b 1862 and George Henry b 1863.

Is there anyway of finding what date and on what ship they travelled out there.Or back again!

Annie and 2 year old Mary were back in London(with grandma) by the 1861 census, and both the girls seemed to have been brought up by grandma from 1871 onwards.

Did Annie travel back to Oz in 1861 to have Sarah and George-and stay there,or did she come back too?

Many thanks to anyone who can help me with ships look ups.

Carol

Hello Caroll,
Online records for NSW  http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/cgi-bin/Index/IndexingOrder.cgi/search?event=births will show  3 the three children to Henry and Annie SANFORD:

V1859636 149/1859 SANFORD   MARY
 717/1859    SANFORD           MARY
1182/1862    SANFORD           SARAH A
2293/1863       SANFORD    GEORGE H    you are able to purchase these on line.

http://mariners.records.nsw.gov.au/ has a Henry Sanford travelling to Sydney in 1874, 1881,1886 plus other entries in deffeent dtes for MR, MRs Miss. All singles no families.

Could find none in the NSW online indexes http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/state-archives/indexes-online/indexes-to-immigration-and-shipping-records/indexes-to-assisted-immigrants either for Sandford or Sanford.

They certainly had time between the births of Mary and Sarah for her to have travelled to and from England.

I understand that there are online records availble for people entering and leaving the UK but most you need to subscribe to or pay to look at the records there are 4 listings 1878-1960, for an Annie Sanford and 28 for Mary Sanford, on Ancestry,  but I am not a paid subscriber.

Perhaps another rootschatter will be able to help.

regards

Robyn

Carol there is a transcription service for certificates in NSW... a cheaper and quicker option to purchasing a certificate online.  Same information.

Hello there

Many thanks for that- although using Joy Murrin in the past I do have both the girls birth certs thanks  ;)

I have been through the passenger lists on FindMyPast and Ancestry, but both are much later than the 1858/9 that they would have travelled out to Oz.

The mariners records are interesting- I will look at those thanks.

On their marriage cert in London he is described as a plasterer, but on the Sands directory of 1865 at 230 Castlereagh Street Sydney,he's working as a Carman......then he and his son George vanish  ::)

Off to look at the mariners lists.

Thanks Jen,

I've looked at him before-but as he's so old and the index gives no details, will the cert have anything more on it for me to know if he's mine?

I did find a ship on that mariners list travelling from London in Sept 1861 with an Ann and a Mary on it.Of course no ages or relationships are given so they could be mother(Annie) and 2 year old daughter- cos she was back in Sydney having Sarah by 1862.

Well I  did wonder if he was  Henry Sandord  cause  he  must have been born what say at least 20 years  before 1858 giving him a birth date of 1838c?  Do  you  know how old Henry was at marriage?

It  is very odd I  have looked at other states  and can't seem  to turn  the family up,  what about New Zealand?

He was 22 when he married on 15th Feb 1858......so born 1835/6.

The girls Sarah and Mary grew up and married in London- but I haven't been able to trace mum Annie ,dad Henry or son George.

Have never thought of them going to New Zealand(funny that, cos another of their ancestors emigrated there in 1952 as a £10 POM ;D)

Hmm I'll give that some thought- thanks.

Carol

Oh s*d it, I think I'll bite the bullet and order that death cert just to see what it says!

I guess living in England  you  may  have allready checked where Annie Roger's  mother  is buried just on  the  off-chance  she is in  the same grave or memorialized on  the head stone.  I have one lot of family  in Yorkshire who have ten people on  the headstone  but not all buried in  the grave ;D

I  guess it is possible  the family  may  have died at sea on  their way  home cause little  Sarah  had to have got back to England somehow to be on  the 1871 with her grandmother.

Quite a number of our early pioneers crossed the ditch to NZ ;)
