Looking for Jeannie McKenzie on the 1871/81 census
« on: Saturday 02 May 09 08:40 BST (UK) »
Hello,

Trying to narrow down the birthplace of this direct line ancestor.

27 years old Jeannie Mckenzie a domestic servant (spinster) married Charles Smith on 29th March 1889.  At the time she was working at 'Tilbouries'? Maryculter, District of St Nicholas, Burgh of Aberdeen.

Her parents both deceased.  David McKenzie (seaman Merchant Service ) and mother Sarah McKenzie M.S. Bell.

I have her forwards from the marriage.  I have the Smith side back to 1830 in Aberdeenshire after that it's a dead end (not a brickwall) and have accepted that and drawn a line under it....  Please don't spend money on SP as I can do that myself...  :O)

Thanks for any help given.

Regards, Steve    :O)

No Monica,

 - as Charles Smith the husband was a joiner, but, on your prompt went and looked at what was staring me in the face.  Jeannie - in the 1991 census is Jane Smith - born Maryculter, Kincardineshire.  Both living in Aberdeen with their 1 year old son James.

Looks as though this thread will come to an end - shall go off and check SP now.  Thanks again.  Regards,  Steve :O)

Thanks Monica.

Looks as though you may have solved the mystery.

Downloaded the needed certs.  Sarah Bell dies in 1869 - wife of James Laing - a joiner - witnessed by her sister ? Christina Bell  (badly faded).  At the time she's at North Tilbouries - daughter of a David Bell - farmer deceased and Christina Bell - hard to make out m.s.  There is a will on SP (1840), for a David Bell a tenant farmer at Tilbouries.

Christina Jane Bell was born at Tilbouries - no father on cert.  This is I believe my Jeannie Mckenzie?

Very busy just now - got to go.  Any possiblity of finding Jessie and Christina Jane together at Tilbouries on the 71 census?   with the surname Bell?

Thanks very much.  Regards,   Steve

'Jeannie' died at aged 86 in Aberdeen in 1948.

That's great Steve  :) You have confirmed what I saw earlier. If you do a children search for David Bell and Christian SELBIE, you will see amongst the other children born in Maryculter, their daughter Sarah b. 15 Dec 1838. Another daughter Christian also had an illegitimate child, Alexander in 1855.

This looks like mother and daughter Christian and grandson Alexander in 1861 - everyone born in Maryculter:

Christian Bell 68, Crofter Of 4 Acres
Christian Bell 28, dressmaker
Alexander Bell 5, grandson

Address: Wester Telbouries Croft, Maryculter

And the family in 1851, with young Sarah:

David Bell 26, Farmer (of 85 Acres-moor 100 Acres-3 Labourer)
Elizabeth Bell 24, b. Deskford, Banffshire
David Bell 2 Months
Christian Bell 58, Annuitant, mother
Mary Bell 16, sister
Elizabeth Bell 14, sister
Sarah Bell 11, sister
David Selbie 21, farm servant and four more farm servants

Address: West-telbouries, Maryculter

Jeannie's mother Sarah looks to be working as a domestic servant in 1861:

Sarah Bell, 22,House Maid Dom Servt,  b. Maryculter
Address: 68 Queen Street,  St Nicholas Aberdeen

::) Sarah is working at the McKenzie household. Stating the obvious, I wonder if that is how she met David McKenzie. Showing in the household in 1861 (everyone born in Aberdeen unless shown):

James McKenzie 54, baker, b. Auchterless, Abdnshire
Jane McKinzie 40
James McKenzie Jur 22, sailor
William McKenzie 14
Caroline McKenzie 12
Alfred McKenzie 10
Sophia McKenzie 8
Moria McKenzie 4
Orlando McKenzie 1
Willm Murray 19, baker apprentice, b. Tarves, Aberdnshire
Alexr Christie 15, b. Tarcland, Aberdnshire
Ann Gerard 26, visitor, housemaid, b. Fetteresso, Kirknshire

Struggling to find Jeannie in 1871 at present. Likely sister died? A death shows in Maryculter for a Jessie Bell in 1865, shows as age 1. Strange that Sarah called one of her daughters Jessie born 1864 following her marriage to James Laing (assuming there is not another couple with the same names):

1. GEORGE LAING Birth: 12 DEC 1863 Chapel Of Garioch, Aberdeen
2. JESSIE ANNE LAING  Birth: 22 NOV 1864 Chapel Of Garioch, Aberdeen
3. IDA MARY ELSPET LAING  Birth: 06 NOV 1866 Saint Nicholas, Aberdeen, Aberdeen
4. THOMAS LAING  Birth: 02 NOV 1868 Chapel Of Garioch, Aberdeen

I've been trying to find James Laing and children in 1871 in case Jeannie was with them but also no joy so far for the family.

Monica

ADDED: I think James Laing is boarding in 1871 in Newhills, Aberdeenshire. No children with him. He looks to have gone on to marry a Fanny OGG (now, there's a name!) in 1872 and in 1881:

James Laing 40, Carpenter, Master, b. Chapel of Garioch, Aberdeenshire
Fanny Laing 39, b. Kincardine O'Neil, Aberdeenshire
Ida Laing 14, b. Aberdeen

Address: 22 Urquhart Road, Old Meldrum
