Salisbury Wiltshire - ELTON Martha 1786
« on: Sunday 31 May 09 18:13 BST (UK) »
If possible, please look up christening 12 Mar 1786 at Newton Toney Parish for Martha Alton (or Elton).

She later married Thomas Rodwell (Shoemaker b 1778 Salisbury) at St Edmund's. It's possibly simplest, at this stage, to request a separate lookup for that marriage at another time.

For now anyway, what I am particularly keen on finding out are details of Martha's parents, but anything you can come up with would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers
Warren

Newton Toney, Amesbury, Salisbury - ALTON or ELTON Martha 1786
« Reply #2 on: Monday 08 June 09 14:48 BST (UK) »
Hi Kris,

Well done. We are having such a good run with this pair (Thomas Rodwell & Martha Elton). At this point, I won't search any further back with the ELTON name as I've got enough research to do with just the RODWELL name.

So far as I'm concerned, this lookup request is completed.  ;D

Cheers
Warren

Hi Kris,  :o :o

Can we bring this request back to life again, please?

What's had me wondering about Martha ELTON (B:1786) and Thomas RODWELL (B:1778),
is why they did not have any children until 1817. That would have made Martha 31 and
Thomas 39; unusually late for those days.

I've come across a Sarum Marriage Licence Bond issued:

Date:    4 Dec 1799
Groom: William PONTIN
Parish: Chilton (Solely) Berkshire England; farmer

Bride:   Martha ELTON
Parish: Ham Wiltshire England
Bride's Condition: sp

Bondsman 1: GOATLEY Robert, scrivener, Speen, Berks
Jurisdiction: The Bishop of Salisbury in Wiltshire and  Berkshire

I understand that the issuing of a licence does not necessarily
mean that a marriage took place, but this could be the same
Martha ELTON that later married Thomas RODWELLl. Of
course, our Martha would have been aged 13 in 1799.

There's a William PONTIN ; 33 Ag. Lab; WIL included on the
North Wiltshire Online Project 1841  Book 14 Folio 10 Pg 12
http://www.pope-genealogy.me.uk/41186.html

This could be the son of the groom William PONTIN in the
Sarum Record of 1799. The son could have been born in
1807 or 1808. There does not appear  to be any Martha
PONTIN listed in the 1841 census. That would have then
made Martha ELTON 21 if she was the mother.

Any comments?

Cheers

Hi Warren,

There does appear to be a lot of Eltons in Ham. I did come across that Martha when I was hunting. She appears to be the daughter of Thomas and Ann baptised 28 Mar 1877 Ham.

Cheers Kris  :)

Hi Just picked up your threads. If it helps any the marriage of Martha Elton and William Pontin did take place and I am a descendant of this marriage. The Pontins lived at Soley (Chilton Foliat) until about 1820 by which time the family was moving across the county boundary into Kintbury (Berkshire). Ambrose William Pontin left Kintbury for South Wales (Aberdare) where he married in 1852. The family remained there until the 1980's. Pontins died out in Kintbury c. 1870.

Thanks for your comments, windywick ... most interesting indeed  ;)
Unfortunately (for me), there doesn't appear to be a Rodwell connection
