Topics now merged.  There are at least 9 Newbiggins in the Cumbria/Durham/Northumberland/Yorkshire area in my road atlas so it is not an easy task to find him!

Hi again

I've been cross checking the Northumberland Newbiggins with Reg areas .

we have ~

Newbiggin by the Sea - Ashington (Morpeth rRD)
Newbiggin - South of Hexham (Hexham RD or Shotley High Q  RDafter 1887)
Newbiggin - near Blanchland/Consett  (I think this would be Lanchester RD but could be Hexham. It's not clear on Genuki :-\)

The only birth registration that appears to match is:

John Charles Seymour, June q, 1885, Lanchester ,vol 10a, p 311

A quarter early but it's the best I can come up with.

I've not checked for this person on any of the censuses or possibles deaths.

I am very sorry to have confused everyone. ???

This thread was purely to establish where Newbiggin was!

I simply put a link to my original thread in this first post to give everyone a little more background!

Could the mods please close this thread and open my original one now we have established my Newbiggin is in Northumbria?

Many Thanks.

True - but very many of them are in Scotland, and the enquiry was was about Northumberland or Durham.

..and the Army Pension record clearly states Northumberland.

I've looked for this person for many hours now on censuses and BMDs, Jennifer (as you have) and can't find a suitable one.

My thoughts are that either John was born with a different surname and took the surname of a stepfather or that his first name wasn't John  :-\  Nothing is coming up at all.

added - now wondering if it might even be Newbiggin Hall/Low Newbiggin west of Kenton in N/c itself - there are some birth regs coming up for Newcastle - but why would he say b. Newbiggin rather than Newcastle  :-\

It seems from the Army Record that John could be economical with the truth.

It seems that he states that he married Mary Jane Sidlow, a spinster,  in 1900, and that her son Herbert was his, when in fact he married her in 1913, and she was a widow. Working from the date of birth given on the army record this makes him a mere 15 when he married her!

Mary Jane (Ashworth)  married her first husband,  Frank Sidlow, in 1900, and Herbert was Franks son, not John's.

yes - lots of inconsistencies but no real leads whatsoever. We know his height and other physical characteristics, his full army health record, etc.

Another thought - how did he get to Manchester?  ....and, if he wasn't born Newbiggin, why did he choose to give that as his birthplace?

Just wondering if Tracey might manage to get an obituary for him - maybe he had siblings  :-\
