1871 census
« on: Friday 04 December 09 15:10 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
Am I needing put down? 1871 ref rg10 257 9 12 has the following:

WILLIAM JACKSON 39 MOULDER IN IRON-MANCHESTER
ELIZABETH JACKSON 26                            SWANSEA
C S ELIZABETH JACKSON 4                        CARDIFF
WILLFRED  2                                              NOT SURE WHAT THAT READS.

Anyway I am looking for a William Hood born 1839 Manchester, Moulder in Iron (as per 1861 census and records when he went to Australia in 1876) Elizabeth Hood born Swansea, Daughter Catherine Sarah Elizabeth born 1866 Cardiff and an Alfred who died aged 28 in 1898 in Adelaide Australia. Do not have Alfreds birth. Also a son William John Hood was born 14.09.1871 at 6 Caledonia Street Islington-have birth cert.
Do you think this could be my family in 1871-not a clue why Jackson though. Finally bmd has a birth of an Alfred Francis Hood in 1868 in Holborn that covers Finsbury.
Comments as to whether I'M to be put down are welcome.

John

The birthplace for Willfred may be Lydney, Gloucestershire (is this Alfred?).

There are all sorts of reasons why surnames change (error/illegitimacy/...) so it probably is your family.

Hi Guys,
Looking very closely at the census do you think it could read W ALFRED JACKSON, reason there is a William Alfred Hood born sept 1/4 1870 fordingbridge. Again its not Gloster though.

Yes, I do.
I had always assumed/guessed that it was Alfred really - but it does actually say W Alfred.

This is something of a longshot:

Birth
Dec 1868   Chepstow (includes Lydney)
William Alfred Wood

The 1851 entry is odd:
HO 107/2141   Sandiacre, Derbyshire
Joseph Hood, 45, Furnace manager, b Deepfield
Catherine Hood, 44
Emma Hood, 21
Joseph Hood, 18, moulder
William Hood, 11
Jane Hood, 11
George Hood, 8
Alice Hood, 6
Albert Hood, 3
Janet Hood, 1     all children born Wolverhampton, except that William's is left blank!

The IGI has Joseph Hood m Catharine Spilsbury in Wolverhampton in 1827 and then gives some of their children including William and Jane Hood b Manchester in Oct 1839, so I think the entry for Jane must be wrong in 1851.

Still no sign of anything to do with Jackson.

Richard,
You have been working hard on my behalf. Indeed this is William with his parents in 1851. The last name on this census is actually Agnes and she too was born Wolverhampton. I have all childrens parish births records/gro records except for the last 3. Have their baptism records but have never found offical gro records after years of ordering wrong ones!. The family appear in 1861 in Cardiff and William is on that aged 21 born Manchester, and a moulder in iron. His sister Jane was a twin and sadly died in a birmingham asylum from a brain disease.
I think you have hit the jackpot with the Chepstow ref. I have already ordered the cert and will ley you know the outcome. If correct then as far as I am concerned this is the family in the 1871 census.

Again many thanks for all your help and interest in this posting.

John

Posting can now be removed. William Alfred Wood born 1868 Chepstow meets all requirements found on 1871 census under Jackson to be my family. Thanks for all help.
