can anyone help i am trying to track my great great grandfather and have come to a brick wall. The family story goes that Frank vanished in around 1886 leaving his wife and 2 children he may of been a naughty boy and took away...
this is what i do know

Frank Venn born 1859 Brighton sussex
married alice marsh 1882
had 2 children louisa and george
His parents where Henry Venn and annie cooper
he was baptised in Brighton
I have his on the 1861 - 1881 cencus then nothing

any info welcome many thanks linath.......

Hi Linath,

It was too late for transportation to be likely.

If he was in prison or an institution in this country he may have been recorded in the census only by his initials.

Not much help to you I know, but given that in 1881 his occupation was mariner, he may well have been at sea on census night, alternatively he would have been well placed to jump ship and start a new life abroad. 

He may simply have changed his name to start a new life, possibly with someone else.  I have a  widow in my tree who set up home with a man and he appears in the census with her surname, it was a long time before I discovered his real name.

               There are 2 instances of a Frank Venn, travelling, alone Liverpool to New York on Passenger lists for the MAURETANIA ,19 sept 1911 listed as an Inventor and 16 sept 1914 listed as Mechanic.
