Plymouth Baptism - HANNAFORD c. 1900 COMPLETED
« on: Wednesday 10 February 10 19:31 GMT (UK) »
If anyone has access to the appropriate parish registers I should be most grateful for help with the following.

I have Frederick Hannaford in the 1901 census, aged 1, born Plymouth living with his family in Oakfield Terrace, Sutton, Plymouth part of the parish of St. John the Evangelist.  This is the only trace to be found of Frederick, no birth or death registration.  By 1911 his parents are dead, one sister is in a home and a brother on a training ship.

There is a birth registered Q1 1900 of a William Frederick Hannaford, Plymouth who in 1907 appears to have been in a party of Dr. Barnardo's children sent to Canada and it seems quite possible that this is the boy I am looking for.

Unfortunately when William Frederick married in Canada he did not know his parents given names so I am unable to confirm, or otherwise, that way.

If there is a baptism for William Frederick Hannaford it would save me buying
the birth certificate, possibly of the wrong person.

With thanks.

Hi

As he is with parents Arthur & Ellen in 1901, you can send for that 1900 cert but put a condition on your application that you only want it if his parents were Arthur & Ellen

If it's the wrong one (and I doubt it is) the GRO will only charge a £3 search fee

Thanks Carole.  Actually I had forgotton about putting a condition on a certificate application so that was a very helpful reminder!

I have most of the family events and census well covered, its just Frederick that is a mystery.

Another element is that there was a family story that he went to Canada but it was vague (as it probably would be) and it has been assumed that he went as a adult, but I have found no record of his voyage.

Thanks again,

Selina

Hi

If his parents had both died by 1907 he may have been sent to Canada - however - have a look below.  Looks like his older brother also died pre-1911.  Fathers age is a bit out as he was 63 in 1901

Deaths September qtr 1905

Arthur W Hannaford  aged  20  Plymouth  5b 139

Deaths March qtr 1906

Arthur Hannaford aged  62  Plymouth  5b 179

Marriages March qtr 1910

Ellen HANNAFORD   Plymouth  5b 532  to either Edward George Ash or William Alexander Smith

No death on freebmd between 1901-1911 for Ellen

Hi Carole,

Many thanks.  I will see if I can follow up that Ellen on the 1911 census.

There is a death of an Ellen Hannaford in Q1 1910, E. Stonehouse district, but the age is 48 which is 5 years out, she was born 1857.  It is possible that her age was guessed I suppose.   Their were older children by her husbands previous marriages.

However her daughter, born 1897, was in a Home for female orphans in the 1911 census.

Anyway will now see if I can rule the Ellen who married in 1910 in or out.

I've just been trying to find her on the 1911 index but not having any luck.  You can bet your life that if it is her - she married Smith just to make life difficult!!

Yes they either marry someone with a name like Smith or disappear into thin air!

Hi

Something just occurred to me

If it was Ellen who died in 1910 - why would they send Frederick to Canada in 1907?

Also - there were several other Ellen Hannaford's living in Plymouth in 1901 so that 1910 marriage could be any one of them
