Thanks Jen :)
Does it also say what his profession was then?

I'm trying to get a picture of how the person I'm really after - Henry Thomas Newton Ch. - was viewed in his family. In the 1871 Census I found him as a lodger at Emsworth in Hampshire (spelled Henry Cheshire).
His eldest brother was an attorney & lawyer, the next was a banker. Henry became a Lieutenant in the Royal Navy but managed to get out before the Crimean War began...I'm not sure he ever told about the children he had with his housekeeper in Norway...doubt it. He is listed as 'unmarried' in the 1871 Census, technically true as he didn't marry her,but...

My typing skills have suddenly gone down the pan! Laura Phillips' middle name is Caroline!
I also managed not to see the domestic staff - do you want them too?
The family has been transcribed as Chaphyre by An******
Jen
Could the Laura Phillips be a twin with Augustus do you think?
Where did you find the transcription with such an odd spelling?
It could be interesting to see how many domestic staff they had....

Sometimes, when there is a very unusual or easily mis-spelled, it makes more sense to search in a different sort of way from normal. So I searched for Jack, no surname, born c1836 in Little Eaton, Essex, with father's name John. When I saw 'Chaphyre' it looked like a mis-transcription, so I had a look at the original image and there they were. :)

I'll have a hunt for Augustus in 1861 and see what I can come up with as far as his occupation goes.

I have just found Augustus Chesshyre in the 1891 census. He is a  lodger in Wraxall, Somerset and described as a retired Major General, Staffs Corps.

Interestingly, his wife is still alive and 'living on her own means' in Lansdown, Bath. Both still say they are married but Mary is listed as head of household so I'm thinking they must be estranged.

I can't see Augustus in 1851, 61 or 71 so maybe he served abroad a lot. Equally, the name is just so easy to mis-transcribe so he could be listed somewhere and I have just missed him. I'll check 1881 now.

He died in the last quarter of 1891, Ref -  Dec 1891/ Bedminster/5c/548 Augustus P Chesshyre.

Great   ;D- it makes good sense that he could be a retired Major General.
What kind of place was he lodging in? Does it fit with his status?

Well not really. He was in an inn, so it's hard to say what it was like.

His wife was in BennetStreet with three servants.

In 1881, they were together in Queen's Square, Bath. But I can't find them at all in earlier censuses.

Well, that's fine anyway. His brother Henry Thomas Newton Ch. is not living with him anyway. Henry T. was also out of the country a lot at least in 1841, 51, and 61.

Could you try to find James William Chesshyre (banker) perhaps in Hertfordshire? This was an elder brother of Henry Thomas.
I'm trying to discover what happened to Henry T.N.C. in the end.
