Susannah Pain(Warner)-Albert Hart
« on: Saturday 29 May 10 20:35 BST (UK) »
Hello,
for a long time now ive been trying to discover what became of my ggg grandmother Susannah Sarah Pain, born c1852 Margate,Kent.

I know that on the 1861 census,shes in Thanet Workhouse,deserted child,mis-transcribed Fain,born 1852 Margate.

On the 1871 shes in Whitstable, born 1852 Kent, and has taken the surname Warner, the name of her mothers second partner(they never married).

I have been unable to find any marriage or death for a Susannah Pain/Paine/Fain or Warner that fits after 1871.What i have found is this:
1881
Albert Hart born 1855 Hastings,Groom
Susannah Hart born 1854 Margate.

1891
Albert Hart born 1858 Hastings,marine stores collector(rags)
Susannah born 1851 Margate.

1901 in Elham,Kent
Albert Hart born 1849 Hastings umbrella maker
Susannah born 1848 Margate

1911 in Elham
Albert Hart born 1849 Hastings umbrella repairer
Susannah born 1850 Margate

William Hart born, nephew, born 1891 Hastings cane chair reseater

death dec quart 1924 Elham Susannah Hart aged 74.

Ive been unable to find a marriage between an Albert Hart and anyone named Susannah, nor indeed any Albert Hart marriages that look likely. The 1911 says married 40 years,so c1871.

Ive looked at other Susannahs born c1850 Margate pre-1881,there are 5 that i can see,ive eliminated 3,leaving Susannah Emptage born 1848 on both 1851 and 1861,and Susannah May,born 1850 on 1851 and 1848 on 1861.

My gg grandmother Sarah Amelia Pain was born 14th March 1870,her birth cert shows her mother Susannah Sarah Pain,no father listed.

Shes on 1881 Sarah Warner born 1870 seasalter with g father Thomas Warner and aunt Louisa Bennett, ive also been unable to find a marriage for her to Thomas Bennett, although she is described as married on some census, also childless, and is Louisa Bennett when she dies in Blean workhouse.

I would be really grateful for any thoughts at all on my theory,or any documented info that could either prove or dis-prove it.

Many thanks,
Nel.

Hello,
ive noticed something else quite intresting whilst looking at this.

Albert Hart had a brother William born c1857 Hastings.

On the 1891 William and wife Anna(Briggs) are living in Margate, with all three sons John,William and Charles born there.

By 1901 William has died, and Anna has re-married to Henry Clapham born 1872 London, they are still living in Margate.

Whats intriguing is that next door but one to them is Charlotte Paine born 1849 margate, the wife of my George Pain(hes in the workhouse). There son is also with them.

This means that Susannah Pains aunt and cousin are living two doors away from Albert Harts sister in law and nephews in 1901.

Clearly this proves nothing at all,but its a very close geographical link, and when theres no documents clutching at straws is the only option.

Id be intrested in any thoughts on it,

Thanks,

Nel.

There's a marriage of Sarah Susannah Pain at Dover in 1870, in which case the 1871 census would be wrong  ???

Thanks Morganllan,

i dont think Sarah Susannah is her as one of the possible two husbands in that marriage is a James Seddon, and on the 1871 theres a Sarah Susannah Seddon born 1847 River living in Dover area,no sign of husband though.

Ive now also eliminated Susannah Emptage from this, leaving my ggg grandmother and Susannah May.
For a lot of reasons i instinctively feel this is my ggg grandmother and father, but if anyone can help me narrow it down that bit further id be very grateful,

thanks,Nel.
