(First ever post, hope I've got everything right)

Looking for further information on John Barrett (apparently anglicized from Batho), my great-grandfather. I have him as head-of-family in the 1901 and 1911 censuses in South Wales, but cannot find anything for him or family under what he lists as his birthplace: "Moelfre, Denbigh".

Any hints on where to look next would be much appreciated, particularly anything related to the name changing.

------------
p.s. I'm very glad to share what I do have, and have made a good start putting it up on Ancestry co uk website (along with the older photos), but for anyone who can use it, here is a summary of the relevant parts. In a perfect world, perhaps I could put my elderly Mum in touch with a relative she's never met?! Also someone related might find/Google this......

What I have confirmed is John Barrett/Batho [Let's call him "JB"] is birthdate (around 1865), married Sarah Clarke (of "Pantywain, Glamorgan") about 1890, and their children James, George, Thomas, Elizabeth, Sarah and Mary.
Also his siblings Robert, William, Emma, Richard and Huw (along with some of their family info) .

Unconfirmed is a record of JB's father's family (from scribbled notes, when I was a kid) in probable order of age:

(1) Aunt, Kathryn Batho (known as "Cutie"!!?!)

(2) Father, John Batho (see below)

(3) Uncle, Mathew Batho (uncertain)

(4) Uncle, Huw Batho

(5) Aunt, Ann(e) Batho

(6) William Cartwright Batho

(7) Aunt Emma, married an Edward, had daughter "Ginny".

Bits about JB's father, John Batho - lived in "Duffryn Cieriog, Glyncieriog Valley and LLanammon".

Bits about JB's mother, Mary "Maiden name either Morris or Stone, from Pontfadwg/Chirk, widowed and later married a Mr Turner."

Various, including
Tuck family
Barrett  Batho  Batha  & variations....
Clark(e)
And wife's SNOXALL family.

Currently looking mostly for info on John Barrett, b about 1865.
He states (in the 1911 census) his birthplace is "Moelfre, Denbigh".
Married Sarah nee Clarke, six surviving children including my grandmother Elizabeth Mary "Bessie" (b about 1900).

Hello Martin T

Welcome to rootschat :)

From freeBMD this looks like JB's marriage

BARRET, John
CLARK, Sarah

GRO ref Mar Q 1890 Merthyr T vol 11a page 704b

It looks like JB's family is listed/transcribed by ancestry as BATHA on the 1871 and 1881 census.  Living at Llansilin Denbighshire.     Several siblings names match and in 1871 the farm where  they were living is a couple of farms from a place called Place   Parc Moelfre :)

per Free BMD

John BATHA birth reg OSWESTRY Sep 1864 vol 6a page 652

also marriage of
James BATHA and Mary MORRIS reg OSWESTRY Dec 1856  vol 6a page 1301

The IGI has extracted records from Llansilin Denbighshire for what looks like James Batha's baptism, siblings baptisms and his parents marriage in 1831.

Re Emma  1891 census she is listed under Emmah Batha, born Llansilin, Denbs. c1867
ref  RG12/2115/42/6

There is a note under her name posted on ancestry by a member sr30765 in 2009

Born and registered Emma Batha, changed spelling to Bather c1892 and married Edward Jones 1892, Edward and Emma are my great grandparents

Hi  :)

Just seen this.

My great grandfather was born in Moelfre in 1856 and I have quite a lot of the Llansilin and surrounding parishes'  records so if you get back to before the start of the IGI online records covering the parish (?1812), do ask because I may have the appropriate records.

The Batha surname was very much a Llansilin name as far as I recall.

In 1871 John was living at what looks like "Lilshew" Llansilin.Perhaps its worth noting that there is a Park Moelfre farm on the same page.

The Batho surname is riddled with variants and is hard to follow through the census years.I myself have a Catherine Bather born in Llanarmon in c 1864 in my Tree who married iinto my Griffiths family.
