The '6' - yes Monica, you may be right.  ;D

Wee Mary possibly being the twin of Robert if they were both born 1835 (or one at the very beginning of the year, the other at the end?)

So, do we think his second wife Janet was previously married to ...? Brownlie, and all the little Brownlies were her children?

Anne

Think so Anne. There is this IGI marriage showing:

DAVID HENDRY and JANET FERGUSSON Marriage: 17 MAY 1858 in Hamilton

Saw the marriage for David and Janet on SP. Unfortunately it didn`t give the name of her previous husband, only said "widow".

Will see if I can find a marriage to a Brownlie. Will have to wait till to-morrow though..it`s getting late here, in the land of the midnight sun!!!

Thank you all for your help and thanks, Monica, for the info about Ancestry.

Mary

By the way, the name seems to be Hendry not Henry

Have just been going through the info you have sent. Also had a quick look at the several tree for Janet Hendry, on Ancestry and there seems to be some errors there. For one, there is talk about half siblings but the dates are the same as the children on Isabella`s death cert.

I also downloaded the birth for George Henry, July 2 1855 and it definitly says  mother Isabella has 3 boys and 2 girl living, 1 girl died, which is the same info on her death cert.

There is 22 years though between the oldest,Janet and David the youngest. Maybe miscarriages or still births but don`t suppose they would be registered any place in those days.

Tried to find Isabella`s birth on SP. I have, who I think, are her brothers, James 1816, Robert 1820, and George,1828 Also the marriage between George Craig and Janet Paterson 1811. Or could there be 2 George Craig and Janet Paterson?

I do believe though that Isabella is my g.g.grandfather George Craig`s daughter and her brother George, b 1828, named one of his daughters Isabella (my grandmother)

One thing I have learned...dont trust what you read on Ancestry without double checking and getting the original certs. Wonder where they got the half siblings from??

Thanks again to all.

Mary

I should have said that george was the youngest not David

Hi Mary

Ancestry trees, as I often say, are what they are. Some incredibly accurate and some plain wrong. In the main, I refer to them only as I would to submitted entries on IGI. Good to use them as a general guide and then verify for yourself  :) I think the issue of the half siblings showing is probably down to the tree owner(s) not following through with BMDs and relying simply on censuses for the earlier generations. Isabella was there in 1851 and then Janet as wife in 1861.

I thought this might be a potential marriage for Janet Ferguson

JANET FERGUSON and THOMAS BROWNLEE
Marriage: 07 APR 1833 Hamilton

These are the Brownlees in 1851, next door to the Hendrys:

Thomas Brownlie 47
Janet Brownlie 40
Janet Brownlie 15
David Brownlie 12
Ann Brownlie 9
James Brownlie 6
Agnes Brownlie 1
James Brownlie 39
John Lindsay 28

Address: 12 Low Patrick St, Hamilton

Thanks Monica for the info.

Had a look for Thomas Brownlie`s death cert... Died 13 Oct 1855, just a few months after Isabella`s death very hard to read but he definitly was m. Janet Ferguson and the kids names all the same. Very handy, living next door!!! Brother James Brownlie, reported the death.

Think the trees on Ancestry are using the Brownlie`s as half siblings?

Thanks once again.

Mary
