OLD SOLDIER - Samuel Pompey
« on: Tuesday 13 July 10 15:19 BST (UK) »
I have an ancestor, Samuel Pompey, who served with the 6th Regiment of Foot between the years of 1798 to 1819.   During this time he must have served in the Peninsular War in Portugual and Spain.   Is there any way to find out more about this old soldier?

He was born in 1781 in Soham, Cambridgeshire and was buried in Glastonbury, Somerset in 1869.   The 1841 census shows him, an Army pensioner, with his family in high Street, Glastonbury.   Similarly in 1861 he was a Chelsea Pensioner again in High Street, Glastonbury.   Any suggestions greatly appreciated.........

Hi gortonboy

Are you suggesting pay as you go credits (if you don't have a Findmypast subscription) are cheaper than ordering directly from The National Archives website?

I believe that TNA have now stopped accepting orders for any copying of WO97.

That's is my view too. The NA will send you a list of researchers. But they would probably want at least £10 and then there is no guarantee that they could find them. The WO97 reference were done by the Friends of the PRO (as was) and here are some mistakes. A researcher will have to copy them and somehow get them to you. At least with FindMyPast you will get the scans that you can download into your tree.

Thank you all for help.   It would seem that Samuel Pompey served with the 64th Regiment not the 6th as I thought.   In that case most of his service would have been in the West Indies not the Peninsular.   I imagine, though by no means an authority, that he may have joined the Perthshire Fencibles upon the regiment's return to Europe.

The regiment, prior to Samuel Pompey, served in North America - see http://64throf.com

I shall wait for FindMyPast to issue the Chelsea Pensioner Records.

Thanks again, Dave
