Robert James Burns

I wondered if anyone can help me.  My GGrandfather is called Robert James Burns, and was born 1873 (approx).  He married Mary Ann Tallentire in Middleton in Teesdale Co Durham in 1896, but I am unable to find any records for him except his marriage and death (death occurred 15 March 1956, Haltwhistle).  I am led to believe he may have been born in Scotland, but my research has come up with a blank.  From his marriage certificate, I know his father was George, and that they both had the occupation stone quarry sett maker.  Some of Robert's Children were born in Scotland, those that I know of were:

William 14 Jan 1903 - Dalbeattie
Ethel 5 Apr 1906 - Aberdeen
Gap when they were in Ireland (believed to be true but unproven)
Thomas 12 Jun 1911 - Gourock

Any help, suggestions or advice would be gratefully received.

Do you know where the family were in the 1881 census ?

Possible long shot but there is a family living at 22 White Street Govan although the fathers occupation is different - there is also an english connection with this family as two of the children (daughters) are listed as born England

Father George age 49 a Forgeman born Bariny lanark (sic)
Mother Jane age 48 born Glasgow

Sons -  George age 23, James 19, Thomas 17, Robert 10 (all born Glasgow)
Daughters Annie age 15 and Betsy age 7 both born in England.

Unfortunately, I don't know where they were in 1881 or at any other time.  I only know Robert's father's name as I got it from his marriage certificate, which is the first trace I have of him.  I don't know his mother's name at all.
