look up Maginness family: Lurgan
« on: Wednesday 21 July 10 12:33 BST (UK) »
I am trying to trace my grandmother's family originally from Lurgan before moving to Belfast around 1900. The census is confusing as the surname is different on both census. 1901 states Maguiness and 1911 McGuinness. My gran was Sarah born approx.1887, her father was Daniel and mother Mary Ann. siblings were elder sisters Margaret and Mary Ann, and a younger brother Samuel born approx 1889 and Ellen Jane 1894.  Any information would be appreciated.

Thank you. I know the family moved to Belfast after 1894 possibly after the death of Daniel.  It's just the roots in Lurgan I can't trace. However, I will keep trying.

I think I have traced my great parents Daniel Maginness who married May Ann Hamilton in Shankill, Lurgan in 1879.  Does anyone have any information on either of these families.

There's a Daniel M'Guinness from Cornakinnegar, Shankill Lurgan in 1864.

That info was from Griffith's Valuation's(online), there's afew McGuinness in the Shankill area.
He rented a house and small garden.
There used to be a place in Lurgan called M'Guinness Row!

I know it's a popular name with many variations on the spelling.  The family moved to Belfast and are on the 1901 and 1911 census without Daniel although Mary Ann is stated as married not widowed.   I can't trace any record of his death.  Their youngest child was born 1874 but what happened him after that is a mystery. I'm running out of options to try find information.

Daniel Maginnis Cornakinnegar had two brothers Edward and William. Edwards sons are Edward and John. There is a genealogy group in Lurgan with one researcher connected to above I have asked her to join and respond to your query.  :)
