NOP Workhouse

She was probably either the Housekeeper to the overseer of the workhouse, or it was a workhouse set up in a row/group of houses and she was "in charge" of one of the houses.

No idea what NOP meant.  It definately looks like Nop to me.  "Not of Parish"?

Still think it's a Hop Warehouse - can you give the census ref or the census year to see what other occupations there were.

If it was housekeeper in a workhouse, it would be indicated on the sheet.

If it's the 1901 census - look on the surrounding pages - there are loads of hop warehousemen and hop merchants around  ;D

There were, apparently, 'innumerable' hop warehouses on Borough High Street

She was probably either the Housekeeper to the overseer of the workhouse, or it was a workhouse set up in a row/group of houses and she was "in charge" of one of the houses.

You can see that above the words 'hop warehouse' someone (categorizing occupations) has written 'Caret.' - i.e. she was a caretaker rather than a housekeeper as we understand the word today.
