Potesta - does anyone....
« on: Thursday 22 July 10 13:27 BST (UK) »
have a connection, in anyway whatsoever, with this surname in their family history ?

I've taken on a challenge to try and help a family member I do have some info but am waiting on receiving more hence there being hardly anything here at the moment.  Just putting the "feelers" out as to how much of a challenge I may have taken on bearing in mind it is (in mind) a fairly unusual name but one I am not having much luck with !

Any feedback would be welcome.

Thank you.

Hi,

FreeBMD has  some Potesta birth/marriage/death registrations; earliest is a death in 1847.

Is it Italian?

I ask because some city states in Tuscany (before Italian unification) had governors/rulers whose title was Podestā or Potestā. It comes from potere = 'to be able', and is related to our words 'potent', 'potential' etc, and basically means 'one with power to...'.

No personal connection, but I was going to mention the variation Podesta.  Caught my eye because this chap was a member of the Titanic crew.  (He survived  :))

Hello,

My whole family (on my Dad's side) are Potesta's. What is it you were looking for exactly?

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for replying, I have been on FreeBMD and had some success.  I've come up against "Podesta" a lot.  I don't think the guy on the Titanic is connected but it'd be an interesting story to tell people  :)

Ella,
Please check your personal messages.

Looking for record of birth of Sidney (Sydney) Herbert Potesta born c1874, mother Mary Ann Jane Potesta nee Moore who in 1886 remarried and became Mrs Parrey/Parvey.  In the 1881 census it says Place of Birth is Deptford but this draws a blank.  I have his military records, marriage and death certificates but cannot find any record of his birth !!

Any help / ideas would be most welcome.

Thank you

GfL
