Have you tried searching for him in the Irish 1901/1911 census (available to search/view for free) on www.census.nationalarchives.ie/

Tried the Irish Census with no luck. As far as i am aware he is Scottish ?? It could just be that the record was damaged/lost/missed ????

There are no marriages showing on SP for a Joseph St*rt (to pick up on variants) and a Margaret M*cK* up to 1895  :-\

Are there no clues on his Marriage Certificate?

As the names of the parents are there, that would allow you to use the 'second person' search on the 1901 Census.

It's my understanding that every man serving received medals of some sort - but perhaps someone on the Armed Forces Board would be able to explain that.

Can't see anything for them at all in 1901 in Scotland  :-\

William, what was the wording relating to the parents for Alexander on his marriage cert.? Did it show mother as Margaret Stewart, maiden name McKay? What about his death entry, anything particular regarding how parents' names were written up?

Were his parents still alive at the time of his marriage?

What was his father's occupation?

Hi William,

I had a look to see if I could find mother Margaret's death

I've only got a couple of credits left on SP, so couldn't have a look at any of the three deaths I found.....

You searched for: Surname: "Stewart"; Surname Option: Exact; Forename: "Margaret"; Forename Option: Exact; Other Surname: "Mc*ay"; Sex: "Female"; Year From: 1893; Year To: 1916;

1 1894 STEWART MARGARET   MCKAY MCLEOD F 54 ST ROLLOX GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 644/06 0122
2 1901 STEWART MARGARET   MCKAY F 63 WEEM /PERTH 398/00 0006
3 1910 STEWART MARGARET   MCKAY F 71 GARNGADHILL GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 644/05 0004

St. Rollox & Garngadhill are 'roughly' the same area - Springburn'ish.

If you were to download the (correct) DC, this would give her husband's name and that of her parents (if known to the informant). Obviously the Perth one is way outwith the area, so it would only be 2 searches.

If you decide to go ahead and have a look at them, would you let us know if you find 'your' Margaret?

Anne
