Which Roman Catholic Parishes please?
« on: Thursday 23 September 10 06:31 BST (UK) »
I am now ready to research my Irish ancestors and require some help please, to get started.

After searching the http://www.rootsireland.ie/  site, I think I've found a marriage entry in 1853 for my 2x great grandparents, Patrick Quinn and Margaret Leonard.

Also, there are a few entries for possible baptism/births for them in 1815 and 1825 respectively, so before I outlay £5, per entry, I was wondering if anyone could tell me which Roman Catholic Parishes, St John and Coan  belong to please? (1815 – 1853).

I have conflicting information regarding the names of Patrick Quinn’s parents also, which makes it difficult to be sure of the correct entry.

I was wondering if anyone knows if the parent’s names of the bride and groom were recorded on the Marriage records pre civil registration?

I have also posted here http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,479772.0.html

Thank you,

Margaret :)

St. John is a civil and RC parish in Kilkenny City. Coan doesn't sound familiar.

see maps of the RC Parishes and Civil Parishes (Irish Times Family History)

..

sometimes - but not that often in earlier records. Some RC parish registers for marriages include many details e.g. father, mother etc, others record just the father's name (as per civil records), and others record no details on parents.

Darn, Coan or Coon or Corn Kilkenny was recorded on the passenger list for Margaret Quinn's, native place and county. I must admit the writing was hard to read.

Thank you for your help - I think I'll download the marriage entry and check out the maps.

This is a good start  8)

You can search the town and townland names in Ireland on the townland database at : www.thecore.com/seanruad

I didn't see anything promising..

Could it be Croan? 3. Km outside Kilkenny?

If it is, the following may be of interest:

Just notice two townlands in Griffit's Valuations  in Kilkenny

Coan East, townland, Civl Parish Dysart.  Coan West, ditto. No Quinns in either: A Barabra in the Civil Parish.

Quinn    Barbara    Dysart    Smithstown

Full list of Dysart, including East and West Coen:

The nearest town is Castlecomber (sp)

Coon or Coan RC Church & Graveyard, Co. Kilkenny, Ireland. Photographs

has 3 Quinn gravestones.

I missed it too!

This might be useful - cannot find a  name of the church at Coan to go with the graveyard, but does give a 200 year old Parish church, and part of Coan was taken into Castlecomber at some point. You could contact the PP about records of the Leoanrds there.....? Just realised I directed you to Quinn graves, not Leonards,

http://www.castlecomer.ie/index.php
gives details of the parish church at Castlecomber -200 years old.  You could maybe write to them for info? Nice pics of the area.

There is a church there, as the graveyard pics show one, but the Ossory diocese website is down.

There is an interesting account of emmigration from Coan in
