Hellyar - the family I do not know
« on: Tuesday 12 October 10 21:03 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find out any information I can about my late father's family.  I know so much about my mother's line (Walsh - very easy to track) but nothing really for my father.

I am curious about my name, Hellyar, where is comes from and so on.  Does it have a meaning?

If anyone can help I would be most appreciative.

Since I never really knew my father (we only met when I was 11 and he died the next year) the information below is all I have been able to gleen.  I have no dates, not real ties to work backward from.

-My father, Edwin Vincent Hellyar Jr., was 1 of several children born to Edwin Vincent Hellyar Sr. & Phyllis Hellyar.
-My father was in the Army at one point, I believe enlisted. (I have asked the Army for any records)
-I was told the Hellyar family was from Springfield, Mass. but moved to St. Louis some years ago.
-And I am told our name of Hellyar is Cornish.

That is all I know.
Hellyar

Hello Lakutreker,

Welcome to Rootschat

This was the very first item that came up when I put in the name - do you think this could have some significance  ??? Date wise  ???

Edwin Vincent Hellyar
Birth Date: 31 Jan 1948 -  Birthplace: Massachusetts
Death Date: 14 Mar 1990 -  Death Place: Los Angeles
Mother's Maiden Name: Barrett

An interesting and unusual surname is of Anglo-Saxon origin, a derivative of the Olde English pre 7th Century term “helian”, meaning to cover, roof, and was an occupational name for a slater or tiler, or even a thatcher. Job descriptive surnames originally denoted the actual occupation of the namebearer, and later became hereditary. Variants of the surname in the modern idiom are Helliar, Hellyer, Helyer, Hilliar, Hillier, Hillyar, Hillyer and Hilyer. The surname first appears in records in the late 13th Century,
