Arthur Hedley Garland
« on: Saturday 23 October 10 12:19 BST (UK) »
Hi
Can anybody check the death of an Arthur Hedley Garland in the British Columbia Death Index for 1936?

I have lost an Arthur Hedley Garland born C1868 in Ireland who married Agnes Eva Snelling 1891 Medway Kent England.  I have him on the 1891 English Census just prior to his marriage.  Arthur and Agnes had 4 children that I know of, the youngest born 1899.  I have Agnes Garland and the children as lodgers on the 1901 English census but no Arthur.

The information that I have on Arthur is -
Born C1865 in Ireland.  Occupation Engine Fitter, and Writer on his daughter's marriage record.

Agnes re married Albert E Austin in 4Q 1921 in Medway Kent, England.

I would like to know if Arther Hedley Garland emigrated to Canada and is this his death in the British Columbia Death Index for 1936?

Many Thanks

Tom (Scotland)

Hi Tom

You can check the BC death registrations on the pilot family search site now.  It gives a little more information than the BC Archives indexes.

http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=collectionDetails&c=fs%3A1538285

This Arthur Hedley Garland was born in India in 1866 and is the son of George William Garland and Elizabeth White and husband of Ida Louisa.

If this is your man, I can look up the information from the registration for you on my next trip to the FHS library.

Susan

Hi Susan

Thanks for the reply.  Alas this is not my man.  My Arthur Hedley Garland was born in Ireland.  What a strange coincidence, exact same name including middle name and same approx year of birth.

Many Thanks
Tom

There are only 3 registered births in Ireland for Arthur Garland (no middle names) and dates aren't close to 1866 so I wouldn't be too quick to rule out the Indian-born one. Note that the baptism found in LDS Pilot Site is 1885 but he was born in 1866.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Ida Louisa Garland's death is also on the familysearch site - b. 24 Feb 1878 England, parents Thomas Boyce and Elizabeth Monroe.

She can be seen with her parents in the 1881 census - some children b. Canada, her father was military.
By 1901 they are in Manitoba (www.automatedgenealogy.com )
http://vitalstats.gov.mb.ca/Query.php shows that Ida Louise Boyce m. Arthur Hedley Garland in 1914

Hi Tom

The offer still stands....I can look up all 3 death registrations.

The Arthur Hedley Garland who died in 1988 just may be a son.  The records on the pilot family search site go to 1986 only; however, the BC Archives covers death registrations to 1988.

Hi Everbody

Just like to say a big thanks to you all for taking an interest in my Arthur Hedley Garland.

I'm not sure where to go with this now.  My main objective was to establish if my "man" left UK and settled abroad, as he just seemed to disappear after the birth of his 4th child Riversdale Morton Garland born 22 October 1898.  Picking up the perfect name match and date and place of birth in Canada seemed to answer my question, but how to verify that this is the correct person. On the 1891 English census he gives his occupation as Engine Fitter, but on his daughter Coinstance Garlands marriage record in Scotland she declares her father Arthur Hedley Garland's occupation as "writer".  I've googled lots to see if perhaps he would come up as a well known writer - but nothing was found.

Perhaps it will remain one of those annoying little mysteries.

Best Regards
Tom
