Family Search - 1881 Census for U.K. - Completed.
« on: Thursday 28 October 10 18:54 BST (UK) »
I have the full 1881 Census for England, Scotland & Wales etc. and cannot seem to be able to use it with Windows 7.  Would someone please let me know if this is an impossible fit??  Any comments will be appreciated.  Thank you.

Do you mean you have it on CD ?

If you are having problems with it you can view it for free on Ancestry.co.uk:

I think you need an account though.

I've seen queries about this before (trying to find the answers), but I seem to recall that it will work with the 32 bit version of Windows 7, but not 64-bit.  Do you know which version you have?

I have also tried running the 1881 Census and BVRI on Windows 7 (64 bit - Ultimate). Even when trying Windows XP (or 95 and 98) compatability mode or as administrator it won't run. Gives the following error:

For BVRI: -
Run-time error '-214.............':
Automation error
Unspecified error

For 1881 Census:
Run-time error 5

No problem installing the Viewer (4.0) and adding the Resource Files. However, the files simply won't run.

Sincere thanks to everyone who replied to this query.  I have no problem installing the viewer but that is as far as I can get.  I will try some of the suggestions, but unfortunately do not have the computer smarts to go too far.  I have a feeling that this is probably not worth the bother.  Before Windows 7 I had Windows 2000 and it worked fine, also on 98 which I had when it was first purchased.  Thanks again.

Although the viewer will install and even allow you to install the census and BVRI links neither will run properly under Windows 7 64 bit (they will run with no problem on the 32 bit version of Windows 7.

If you still have the installation disc for an  older copy of windows, you mentioned Windows 98, it is possible to install a virtual machine and run the 1881 census viewer and bvri viewer on that with no problems. The set up is extremely simple

The image shows 98 and Xp running in different windows on a Windows 7 64 bit machine
