Indian born Kellys
« on: Thursday 18 November 10 15:49 GMT (UK) »
Hello,
I am trying to trace any records of my grandfather's four brothers, all born in Patna, India. Arthur Henry Kelly b. 12.November 1865, Edward Kelly b. 1866 (last known record 1901 census living in Blackwall buildings, Whitechapel, London)
Charles Frederick Kelly, 1st Feb. 1869 (last known address Vancouver, Canada) and Alfred George Kelly 21st November 1870
My grandfather was William Herbert Kelly b. Patna 28th Dec 1863 son of William Henry Kelly and Mary Elizabeth Kelly (nee Powditch)

Thanks a lot. Yes I did know about the 1881 census. I should have mentioned that in my enquiry. Apart from the two references already noted I have no other information on them. A photo taken during the First World War shows Frederick Kelly in uniform with a maple leaf on his collar so I guess he may have emigrated at some time.

www.automatedgenealogy.com/ does show in the 1901 census in Pipestone, Manitoba, Canada, a Fred C. Kelly with the right birthdate (although says b. England) emigrated 1884

Also http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/census-1891/001081-100.01-e.php shows an Alfred George Kelly b. India in Pipestone, Selkirk, Manitoba in 1891 (although he's listed as just 18). By 1901 he be at automatedgenealogy indexed as George H. Kelly (original image shows b. India, birthdate is correct but year off).

Can't seem to spot them in 1911 though.

Hi Diddy,

This one looks interesting. There is a gap between the births of Edward (1866) and Frederick (1869). Could it be that the child did not survive infancy? The father was Henry Kelly. If the mother's name is mentioned (Mary Elizabeth) Then it looks like there were six sons of this marriage. Thanks for this. I will need to investigate further.

also this entry later in Nov:

  Surname   Kelly
 sex   son
 Gender   m
  Place   Patna
 Year   1867
 month   Oct
 day   20
Exact Entry   Oct 20th at Patna the wife of H Kelly Esq of a son
 Year   1867
 Date   14 Nov
 Edition   overland

wonder if just birth again in different edition of paper or whether death - but does,'t say death.

Hi Diddy,

I think your assumption about the same birth but a different edition is more likely. If there was a death then it should be recirded at Christ Church, Patna where all the baptisms took place. The ecclesiastical registers might throw up some info.

Thanks for the trouble you are taking.
