WDYTYA? Series 3, Episode 2 - Rodney MARSH
« on: Friday 03 December 10 09:20 GMT (UK) »
Hi all, just a reminder that Rod's episode will be on air this Sunday night on SBS at 7:30pm.

The Director Russell Vines and myself will be online on the SBS website for one hour after broadcast (EST) for chat.

We look forward to hearing your comments there and on this forum, and hope that you enjoy his family history story.

Regards

Diana

Of course daylight saving beat me and I was unable to join the chat on the SBS site.

I really enjoyed the episode and it raised the issue of "nature vs nurture" which is always interesting - I don't think the debate will ever be settled.

I think there were some very common issues there - convicts, war service, infidelity and divorce, adoption - probably issues that almost all of us have in our family in some shape or form.  It was great to see Rod enjoying his voyage of discovery and the story that unfolded.

I was left with some questions, like what happened to Rod's aunts, including Minnie and Julia - we only really heard about one aunt on the show - what was the original relationship between the Holgates and the Duttons, how did Holgate's life unfold after his wife left him, etc.  Some but not all of these were answered by Diana on the SBS chat.  I know there was only limited time in the show, but I am one who loves to know what happens to all the rellies as well as the central ones!  ;D

I had the issues I usually have with these episodes, ie how easy research is made to look, how people meet the enquirer at every venue carrying relevant documents, etc - if only!  Certainly, at the excellent archives I sometimes visit, the staff is minimal and only have time to give superficial help - certainly not to search out documents and sit down and explain them, and not to take people into the repository, as happened in this episode!

Still, well-done again, Diana and SBS - and if you can tell me what happened to those other rellies, I'll be very interested!   :D

Had trouble tuning into SBS so missed the first 15 minutes ...  :'(

Very enjoyable. But yet another 'celeb' who denies that an ancestor might have been a bad 'un (ie the Marsh convicted of murder- and not even his blood ancestor  :-\).

However he did, rightly, question the character of his Holgate ancestor.

At least no waterworks this week and an interesting story, so I'm pleased.  :)

unfortunately I am going away and will miss the next two episodes - Tina Arena and ?.

Diana, do you know if there is any way I will be able to view these after Christmas?

I enjoy the program because I enjoy genealogical research but it is unreal the way that all the answers are available immediately.

The show didn't mention Daniel's first marriage in England before he was transported - information easily gleaned from several websited.

Obviously in the time available, we can only get a glimpse of small parts of the person's ancestry.

Loved the show, sometimes the hour draws out but episodes like this could have flown through another hour or more.

Diana, I live in Perth so I try and stay away from the live chat and Rootschat so I get no spoilers but I did like you comment about the Geraldton flies on the live chat. When I saw Rod sitting on the hill being bothered by flies I was reminded about many trips I have made to country cemeteries and towns. Let me guess, it was filmed just over 12 months ago? I was actually at the same Geraldton cemetery this time last year and have never seen the flies so bad!

very interesting, but did it ask more questions than it answered. what where duttons ancestors like? did amy holgate's ancestors have anything to do with how rod see's himself as turning out?

is it a coincidence, have a look for robert and amy's wedding on freebmd. then see what the other woman's names are. then look at the first 2 daughters they had.  :o :o
