Mary Jane DONOVAN
« on: Tuesday 28 December 10 20:22 GMT (UK) »
I have a problem with conflicting dates...any help please..
Mary Jane Donovan..born England.. date on F/S 1845... She arrived on the Hastings..ships record, 1869 to Perth WA..age 23...
DPS Perth has her record as arriving 28/1/1868...  She married on 22 Nov. 1869..to James Nelson..no age shown..only fathers occupation..John Donovan, Painter.
The only Mary Donovan I could find on Ancestry censuses, with father John Donovan, painter, was the 1851-1861.. which makes her born in 1844..if that is her.
She died , Adelaide South Australia, 25/5/1930..age 82...This makes her born abt. 1848.. certificate shows she lived in the Commonwealth 60 years..married at 18..questionable...So if anyone can help me sort this out I would be grateful... ::) :)

Hi,
Did Mary travel with any other family to WA?

Doesn't look like the ship 'Hastings' visited WA in 1868, only records around this date I can find is July 1869 and Dec 1864. So possibly the 1868 Mary is a different one, or a transcribing error.

They had children..

NELSON    STILLBORN F    father: JAMES    mother: DONOVAN MARY
born: PERTH 1871       Registration Number: 13159

NELSON    MARY JANE    father: JAMES    mother: DONOVAN MARY JANE
born: PERTH 1872     Registration Number: 13728

NELSON , EMILY ROSE  father:   JAMES mother:    DONOVAN, MARY JANE
born: PERTH     1874  Registration Number: 16054

The childrens birth certificates should have Mary's birth date/age on it.

Emily Rose married Alexander Braidwood in Perth 1900, reg number: 1293

Mary possibly married a Richard Burchell in 1892, Fremantle. Reg number: 260

A search of the Post Office Directories may provide clues.

Dear Merlin...Thanks for your help...and sorry about repeating the story...at that age unfortunately..but, on the third post you gave..I can understand why we are confused..I have two Donovan families in my tree, and neither are related...so, if I get things wrong..blame my ancestors ..not me. ::)  :D anyway...
Mary Jane Donovan.who married James Nelson..is a different branch than that of James Donovan..Ireland...who also gives me a headache...
I just want to know Mary Janes DOB...as I would like to trace her family..and can't without it...
I had closed my thread on this, so thats the reason why I re-posted...wasn't sure what to do..my apologies.. :-[

No need to apologise Dale  :)

I placed the links to your previous threads so that other RC'ers don't go chasing up information that we have already found. It's only so they can they can view it to see if there is anything that might come to light to further your quest. We all understand the frustration when we can't find what we need & get brickwalled  ;)

Did you get a copy of the passenger list of the Hastings voyage to see if there was any further information available?

BTW I am considerably older than you probably think  :D

Hi Dale :D

Happy New Year :)

I think you may have made an error with the dates on your initial post.  There were numerous voyages by the HASTINGS to Fremantle but none in 1868.  The passenger record in 1869 lists a Mary DONOVAN 23 years.  No way of knowing if this is your Mary Jane DONOVAN and no further information appears to be available.

Information taken from death certs is only as good as the knowledge of the informant and my not be correct.

The census info you refer to...

1851
Gloucestershire/Bristol St Andrew   H0107/1953/55/32
DONOVAN John  Head Married  47 years  House Painter  Born Nichola?, Bristol, Gloucestershire
DONOVAN Sarah  Wife  Married  40 years   Born St George, Gloucestershire
DONOVAN John  Son  16 years  Born St Augustine, Bristol, Gloucestershire
DONOVAN Thomas  Son  12 years  Born St Philip, Bristol, Gloucestershire
DONOVAN William  Son  10 years  Born St Philip, Bristol, Gloucestershire
DONOVAN Henry  Son  9 years   Born London
DONOVAN Mary  Dau  7 years   Born London
DONOVAN Sarah  Dau 2  Born St Philip, Bristol, Gloucestershire

Cheers
Cando

Dear Merlin...Thanks for that..and, yes, I do have the passenger list of the Hastings..did note a Kate Donovan, same age as Mary..thought it may be a sister..but no other Donovans onboard....
I looked up the information MrWilson gave...there were a couple of Nelsons in Directory, but not familiar to me...and saw that obtaining a birth certificate does not usually give parents ages...
I realise that information on certificates are only as good as the person who supplies it...
Unfortunately, there are no other family members left to ask..just me....

From IGI - extracted record - a few possibilities.

DONOVAN John
WALL Sarah
30 Jul 1832  St Michaels, Bristol, GLoucestershire

Baptisms with parents John DONOVAN and Sarah
DONOVAN Thomas  1 Oct 1837  St Philip and St Jacob's Church, Bristol, Gloucestershire

Hi Cando...good to hear from you..thanks for all that...and a very lucky New Year year for you also.
Yes, that is my Mary on the Hastings...got that info off DPS in my search for James Nelson, convict, who she married. They had that on their records....so, if she was 23 then, how was it she was 18 when married...brainteaser...
I'm pretty sure that the DOB 1844 is her, but??? need it confirmed, and thats the problem...Once I get that, I can move on... :)
