PETER BORSK
« on: Saturday 08 January 11 05:37 GMT (UK) »
Hi there, looking for any info really on my great grandparents PETER BORSK and DOROTHY SMITHERS.  I know they married in RAINY RIVER,ONT in 1920. He was born in Austria and she was English but their surname was changed to BORSCH for some reason. Not sure when and why this happened! I think they both died in Toronto area but not sure when.
Think he worked with Canadian Railways.
I would be grateful if anybody can shed light on any details, especially dates of death.
Thanks,
Craig

Peter's brother Michael died 22 Oct 1978 in Kamloops, British Columbia. The transcript at the LDS Search site indicates Michael was born 26 Oct 1903 in Lembley Galicia, Austria and his parents were Samuel Borsk and Francis Skowinski. His wife was named Helen Zurkowsky. They married in Rainy River on 26 Nov 1925 (she went by Elena then).

Unforatunately births from less than 100 years ago and deaths from less than 70 years ago are protected by privacy laws.

If you think they remained in the Toronto area, you might want to search the archived Toronto Star newspaper for any announcements or articles concerning this family.  It is a pay site but they have many different plans; ie 1 hour, 24 hours, etc.

There is also a birth for a sister of Peter. Annie Borszez was born 20 Feb 1908 in Rainy River to parents Semein Borszez and Franszka Skawinska. I believe Annie married a Milliard as there is a death for Alfred Ray Clement Milliard on 25 Nov 1929 in Rainy River. His parents are listed as Rainie Milliard and Anna Borsk. Alfred was born 23 Nov 1929 and it indicates his death was due to his being born premature.

There is also a birth for brother Anton Borczez on 9 Jun 1909 in Rainy River to Semko Borczez and Franeski Skawiski.

Another brother Adam Borsk was born 14 Nov 1910 in Rainy River to Semko Borsk and Francski Skawiski.

The family is on the 1911 census listed as Borisk. Here's a link to the image (starting line 32):

It appears the name change to Borsch was something Peter chose given the family arrived as Borczez and then changed it to Borsk.

I found a passenger list entry for Franciska Borczez and children travelling on the Montezuma which departed from Antwerp and arrived in Saint John, New Brunswick on 3 Apr 1907. Here's a link to the image at Library and Archives Canada (about line 13):

I can't find the passenger list entry for Sam.

Ernest John H. Smithers married Charlotte Smith Jun quarter 1892 Chertsey 2a 81.  Chertsey registration district is in Surrey

It looks like Dorothy's birth was registered as Charlotte Emma Smithers Mar 1900 Chertsey Surrey 2a 61.

1901 British census Horsell Surrey (Chertsey registration district)
Ernest 29 Railway fitter and wife Charlotte 29 with children Edith 8, Henrietta 6, George 4, Nora 2, Nelllie 2, and Charlotte 1.  All born Horsall Surrey except for Charlotte (wife) who was born Kensington Middlesex.

There is a marriage Sept 1917 between Nellie Smithers and Paul A Barre Chertsey registration district.  This is most likely the sister that Dorothy was travelling to in Rainy River.  There is a birth for Yvonne E Barre Sept 1918 Chertsey for this couple.

There was a Paul Barre who signed up to fight for the Canadian Expeditionary Force in WWI who was living in Rainy River at that time.  On the Baltic which arrived 21 Aug 1919 Nellie Barre and 1 year old daughter Miss Y are travelling and on board the same ship is Paul A Barre being discharged to hospital in Rainy River.

Form 30A shows that the passenger list for the Minnedosa ties in with this family .  Dorothy is going to P.A. Barre in Rainy River and is intending to work on brother's farm (I would imagine that meant brother-in-law's farm).  It shows her place of birth as Cheapside Horsell.

If the 1901 British census is correct for Dorothy then in 1891 E. Smithers is lodging and working as a bricklayer's assistant in Stoke Surrey.
In 1881 he is living in Horsell Surrey with parents George Smithers, 40, labourer, b. Chobham Surrey and Emma 38, b. Horsell, brother William 6 and sister Ada 3.  Ernest is 10.
In 1871 resident at The Crown Inn Horsell, Surrey.  Head of house is Eliza Cavey, widow, 61, b. Horsell, Baker.  George is a gardener, and son-in-law to Eliza.  Wife Emma is 26 and a baker.

Marriage Dec quarter 1869 Chertsey 2a 41 between George Smithers and Emma Cavey

1851 census for Horsell
James Cavey, 41, Baker, with wife Eliza.  Emma (George's future wife) is 7.

1861 census  for Chobham Surrey George Smithers is living with his brother William and his family.
1851 census for Chobham Surrey George (9) is living with his parents Charles, 47 b. Chobham and his wife Hannah, 45, b. Horsall Surrey.

A witness at Michael & Elena 's marriage was Mary BORSCH (sic) of Lockport Manitoba so perhaps the name had already transformed once again. Michael & Helen remained Borsk, I imagine she knows the cousins, but will post this obit for Hellen/Ellen and a son  http://www.chroniclejournal.com/obituaries/borsk/helen-alice
http://www.chroniclejournal.com/obituaries/borsk/marshall-ambrose
so some of the remaining Nipigon/Thunder Bay area rellies might know more about the family. They seem to remain Borsk in the area.. http://www.mississaugaswimming.com/coaches/news_from_the_deck.htm

Marriage of a sister of Charlotte's as well, would have been born post-census
Winifred Margaret SMITHERS age 24 b.  England, living Hornepayne parents Ernest SMITHERS & Charlotte SMITH, marries Harry Oswald ALLEN 28 May 1926 http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~maryc/tor1926p9.htm

there is also a thread looking for Dorothy in England....http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=505676
