There is some history of Smith Falls here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smiths_Falls,_Ontario

http://www.globalgenealogy.com/LCGS/Surnames/SurnamesJ.htm
 - Someone here is looking for the same family - says she married Isaac Johnson in England and had children there before they moved.

On FamilySearch there is a marriage between Isaac Johnson and Catherine Mintoft
Nov 25, 1814 at Skirpenbeck Yorkshire.

There are a few family trees on ancestry which give Isaac Johnson's dates as
b. 17 Nov 1793 Yorkshire  d.  22 May 1876 Lanark (these seem to be taken from his death registration)

These trees give dates for Catherine as
b. 24 Feb 1793 Yorkshire  d. 19 Mar 1876 Lanark - I haven't found a death registration for her so far.

On the 1861 Canadian census Isaac (67) and Catherine (68) are both living in Montague, Lanark with the following
James Johnson 12 b. Cda
Jane Scott 16 b. Cda Servant
Robert Scott 35 b. Ire labourer
Charity Scott 26 b. Cda (ancestry trees show Charity married Robert Scott and she died 15 Feb 1908 at Smith Falls with a birth date of 13 Aug 1834)
With them are their children - Catherine 7, James 4, Caroline 3, William 2.

On the 1871 census 75 year old Isaac and 78 year old Catherine are by themselves in Montague, Lanark South.

Hi Lynda,

Smiths Falls is a lovely town on the Rideau canal.   The canal was extremely important for moving goods from place to place and also had some strategic importance.  Here is some information on the canal and its history.

Information on Smiths Falls.  Some sites have a few photos of historic buildings - to give you an idea of what was there when your relatives lived in Smiths Falls:

Great!

I grew up near Smiths Falls.  I have been there several times.

It looks as if their daughter Charity was born in Lanark Co Ontario in the early 1830s.  Her older brother Isaac was born in England in about 1826.  This narrows down the immigration dates for you.  It also means that it might be extremely difficult to find a ship or immigration date.  There are very few immigration records for that time period.

However, the 1830s is pretty early - by Canadian standards.  As you relatives are early pioneers, there is likely to be some information about them in local history books or other such sources.   You might consider contacting the Smith Falls Library to see if they can give you any direction.  I posted the link earlier.   You may also see what the Kingston Public Library or Ottawa Library has in the way of local history information.

There is a book on the history of Montague Township, Lanark County.  I don't think it talks much about specific people, but it tells what life was like in the early days.  You can read it online at the ourroots site:
