Theres 18 George Kings born 1865 +/- 2 years in the 1871 census of Kent - none in the Maidstone area tho ...

Can you get a copy of his marriage Cert to see what that reveals about his Father, his age, the witnesses etc?

ah, changes things if he was thus born c1858 - I'll have another look.

What is the source of the Maidstone origin - and the mention of being a seaman?

Oh, and any second forename / initial?

The only link I can get to Maidstone - and soldiering is - 1881 census - RG11/Piece: 929 Folio: 64 Page: 24 - "Maidstone Barracks",  Sandling Road

Quote
he was a private in 97th west kent army in 1882

a George King c1859 born Woolwich is a Private .... but so far, I cant establish from the census pages which Regiment was there  :(

I'm pretty sure that the 97th West Kent were amalgamated with the 50th to become the 'Queens Own Royal West Kent' - try the Museum Website for more info as to whereabouts in 1881 and if they went to Ireland in 1882 ...

still assuming that twas the 97th West Kent, and thus the 'Queens Own Royal West Kent - heres some selected movements of the 2nd Battalion (the first didnt apparently do Ireland in the period of 1882 ish)

2nd Battalion

1824.03.25 97th Regiment of Foot
raised at Winchester
1839 Ireland
1840 England
1841 Ionian Islands: Corfu
1847 Malta
1848 Nova Scotia: Halifax
1853 England
1855 Crimea
1856 England
1857 India
1857 Sepoy rebellion
1867 England
1871 Ireland
1875 Bermuda
1877 Nova Scotia: Halifax
1880 Gibraltar
1880 South Africa
1881.07.01 1st Battalion, The Queen's Own (Royal West Kent Regiment)
1881 South Africa
1882 Ireland: Curragh
1885 England: Chatham
1892 Ireland: Dublin
1894 Enniskillen
1896 Dublin
1898 Egypt
1900.04 South Africa

So, if we follow that man born c1859 Woolwich back to the 1861 census we find:-

1861 census of Woolwich - RG9/Piece: 405 Folio: 28 Page: 7 @ 23, John Street

Francis King 36 Head of Household (WIDOW) born Middx, Poplar: a Dressmaker
William King 15 son born Poplar: Engineer, Royal Arsenal
Ann M King 13 dau Woolwich
Rebecca King 10 dau ditto
Harry King 7 son ditto
George King 4 son ditto
Richard King 1 son ditto

The Husband / Father must have died fairly recently .... trying to locate the Family ten years earlier ...

1851 census of Woolwich (Dockyard) - HO107/Piece: 1588 Folio: 261 Page: 1 @ 15, Land Street

Richard H King 29 Head born Middx Poplar: a Boiler Maker
Frances King 27 Wife born Middx, Limehouse
William King 4 son born Poplar
Ann King 3 dau born Woolwich

So the fly in the ointment is that the George King in 1881 Barracks, Maidstone, altho the right sort of age - does NOT have a Father George, if I have the right man in the above 1861 census ....

Interesting - but did the Enumerator make a mistake?? The PoB of Woolwich did lead to a George in 1861 census, but obviously not the same man as you have.

As I said, the Fly in the Ointment was the Father's name & Occupation - you have found a man with the right Father's name, but not occupation - also your man seems to be in the 46th Brigade - does that equate to the 97th Kent ?

PS. Your PS looks good tho.  :)
