Family Truth or Myth? BIDDLE family in England
« on: Thursday 09 June 11 00:23 BST (UK) »
Many would have had myths/truths passed down from generation to generation in their family

Last week at an afternoon family tea someone said
"Are we related to the Duke of Wellington ?"
Others agreed that they had heard the same story
So where do I as the "family historian " go with that !!

Where do I begin to search ?
Any helpful ideas would be good
I have done quite a long study of BIDDLE history from Leicestershire and now Australia

Hope this has not opened a can of worms and I realise  that ALL births/ deaths must be verified with certificates
ARE the Biddle family in any way connected to the Duke of Wellington?

Hmm, I have researched a family that is related to the Duke of Wellington, that also have connections to Leicestershire, the surnames there that link it up are SALE and THOMS. Wellington's family are irish - do you have any irish connections?

Other than that you will have to do a pedigree with all known ancestors and research all the offspring marriages.

Without more details of 'your' Biddles that's the best I can suggest.

Hi - I've just looked at some previous posts and I see you have an Amy Hill in you tree, The Dukeof Wellington's mother was AnnHill, perhaps that might be where the connection is.    :-\

Dear Debbie
 Thanks for your rely
Now the Amy Hill WAS a huge error on the part of a researcher in Sydney so she is eliminated

But I will follow up your other suggestions and good to know that my question about Duke of Wellington was a sensible one

I know this is a long shot but I am looking for information on Ivy Evelina Biddle from Wahroonga. Am I on the right track?

I have just noticed how old this post is. But, having said that, a little digging, and found this :-
Lt.-Gen. Arthur Richard Wellesley, 2nd Duke of Wellington
Mr. Oeorgo Biddle, was the Duke of Wellington's valet.
That may be where the link is/was. The Duke reportedly dropped down dead at Brighton Station on the 13th August 1884. Mr Biddle was with him.

What a fascinating link of the names! Just shows how one fact can become distorted, quite innocently, to another "family legend"! Brilliant, Malky!

Also interested in Leigh& Burrows,(Lancashire) Griffiths (Shropshire & lancs), Leaver (Lancs/Yorks) & Anderson(Cumberland and very elusive)
