1700's Swiss-Irish Hollinger Families
« on: Saturday 18 June 11 20:29 BST (UK) »
1649 Irish militia Capt. Ruprecht Robert Hollinger, born 1590 Waldshist, Switzerland, married (1640?), in (Holland?). American Revolutionary War, state of Georgia, sutlers and distillers, Titus and William Hollinger may descend him?  My ancestor, Adam Hollimger, of 1750's to 1770's Hollinger's Island, off Mobile, Alabama, supposedly is a descendant; though the name of Adam's parents are unknown. A picture of Adam shows him wearing a gentleman's wig. One of Adam's wives (Elizabeth Moniac) was the daughter of Creek chief Samuel "Sam" Moniac, Sr., who 1790 signed the peace treaty with President George Washington, New York City, 1790.

I descend wife Mme. Marie Josephine de Juzan Hollinger, who's daughter Margaret Hollinger, in a one week wedding celebration, Hollinger's Island, 1815; wed Col. Gilbert Christian Russell, Sr., 3rd U.S. Infantry, for whom Russsell County, Alabama, is named.  Another daughter wed U.S. Senator, Col. George Washington Owen, Mayor of Mobile, who's daughter wed Adm. Raphael Semmes, commanding officer of the Civil War, Confederate sea-raider CSS Alabama, sunk off France.

Where in Ireland these Hollingers are from is unknown; County Antrim seems to have had early Hollingers.

I'm Andy Hollinger, also a descendent of Adam of 1786 Mobile ... I am currently trying to tie him to Titus in Ga or, frankly, anywhere .. but need some level of documented facts ... any ideas?

I'm really confused here as I can't see any mention in either post about a County Antrim, or even Irish, connection. Perhaps there's important information that's been omitted?
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hi,
The last line of the initial posting mentions Ireland and Co. Antrim. The distribution of names in the 1850s shows a few families of Hollingers in Co Antrim and one in Co. Down.

Regards
Stewart, Irwin, Morrison, Haslett, Murrell - Dungiven area Co. Londonderry
Browne, Barrett -Co.Armagh
Neil, Smyth _Co. Antrim

I quickly looked at Bill MacFee on his website http://www.billmacafee.com
The muster rolls of the 1660s don’t seem to include any Hollinger, but i didn't search all Bill offers, in the next century among the http://www.billmacafee.com/1740returns/1740religiousreturnsulstername.pdf
Are the following entries
2420 8 Hollinger Hollinger Thos Antrim Toome Manybrooks
2419 7 Hollinger Hollinger Titus Antrim Toome Manybrooks
2501 89 Hollinger Hollanger Wm Antrim Toome Manybrooks
7387 2811 Hollinger Hollinger Wid (born?) L'Derry Loughinsholin Ballinderry Not specified Not specified
in another he has
4444 Hollinger Hollinger Thos Toome Grange of Ballyscullion [Manybrooks]
4443 Hollinger Hollinger Titus Toome Grange of Ballyscullion [Manybrooks]
4525 Hollinger Hollanger Wm Toome Grange of Ballyscullion [Manybrooks]

Manybrooks has disappeared as a parish name but should be traceable perhaps in the OS memoirs for the barony

there were still there in 1862 see Griffiths valuation with a little growth and in the 1911 irish census but also more widespread

I am sorry to hear of his passing ...

The documents listed above I got 3 VERY promising Hollingers ... Titus, William and a Thomas ... is there anywhere I can find whether they came to the US and when ... I am trying to find Mildred Hollinger - who marries and has 2 doz kids with William Gaines (and down the road comes Jimmy Carter)... where she lived in VA ... thinking her brother or someone COULD be Adam Abram ... IS the Titus in the 1740 Irish document the Titus (son or father) we find in Georgia...

I am really trying to stay away from undocumented sources that seem to proliferate Ancestory and FamilySearch that seem to make stuff up to suit what they want ... but any help on pre-Revolutionary Southern Hollingers would be helpful

Thanks Andy
