Dating needed please
« on: Thursday 30 June 11 04:37 BST (UK) »
Could someone please date these two photos for me? I feel sure they are of the same woman, it looks like she has the same headdress on in both photos. The cabinet photo has nothing printed or written on the back, the card is of a light brown/grey colour. The Carte de visite has a handwritten name & address written on the plain white/cream card back. If the photo is of the person whose name is on the back then she was born in 1867 and was still alive in the 1911 census, death date unknown.

I live in NZ & am researching:-
The WILSONs of Longnor Staffordshire, Winster Derbyshire, Birkenhead Cheshire thence to New Zealand.

Could well be the same woman...very distinctive face especially the nose. Second photo, about 1900 give or take a couple of years but about 1904 at the latest. First photo, not much to date.

Cheers,
China

Thanks WiggyHobbes, yes that's what I was thinking. So now I think she looks to be a lot older than the age of the person's name on the back, she would have been only 35 or so. Perhaps her mother who was born in 1836, seems a more likely candidate.

That would put her in her 60s wouldn't it - would seem reasonable to me - but I'm not the expert, China is!

Unless she'd been very sick maybe??    She doesn't look in brilliant health does she?

Yes she definately looks to be in her 60's to me and possibly her face/mouth is sunken in like that from no longer having any teeth or just from age. Had a hard life I reckon!

I've positioned the face from the smaller image on top of the first using 50% opacity. Although it's already been more or less decided, I would say they are most certainly the same lady.
