Surbey and Empson lost in West Sussex
« on: Wednesday 13 July 11 20:45 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I'm helping my friend research her family tree and we're stuck with the following...

Doris Rosa Surbey was born in East Preston in 1913.

Her parents were John Edward Surbey (transcribes as Sarbey/Surbet) and Alice Empson who married in East Preston in 1908 and that's all we can find.

I can't find Surbey's or Empson's in the local area in censuses and I can't find Alice or John's birth records.

Thanks in anticipation

Looks as though Alice Empson (born c.1882 King's Lynn, Norfolk) was the daughter of Venus Empson who, along with her young family, was in the King's Lynn Union Workhouse in 1891.  Father Kenneth S Empson.
Hope this is enough to get you started

Dazey

We are not allowed to reveal what is written in the 1911 census, but their freely available index only has one Alice Surbey in Sussex and therefore affirms Dazey's findings that your Alice was born around 1882.
The only possible birth reference on FreeBMD that would fit is as follows:
Births March quarter 1882  EMPSON Alice, King's Lynn in Norfolk. 4b   364

If you then return to the index with that enhanced info, I think you will find it cross checks.

You may have this by now, but another Canadian connection here as Arthur Empson b.1884 King's Lynn, England / Bachelor /parents Kenneth Empson and Venus Hardy married Laura Sabina Hasler in Victoria, British Columbia. His death and birth date are listed in another entry...
The birth of Edward William Empson has father with full name: Kenneth Samuel Empson
https://www.familysearch.org/search/recordDetails/show?uri=https://api.familysearch.org/records/pal:/MM9.1.r/MN5R-ZZZ/p4

also if it interests you...Alice's brother Arthur signed up with the C.E.F. for WW1 in Victoria B.C

Alice's brother Harry signed up with the C.E.F. as well!

( those entries and more information can be found here, including how to send for full military files which may have some personal information of interest

  awe Henry didn't return

I had wondered, given their dire circumstances, if they may have been sent as home children but can't see them on any incoming indexes (at all )
