Finding a spouse - advice please **COMPLETED**
« on: Saturday 30 July 11 02:27 BST (UK) »
Hi all....

Advice please :-)

I'm assuming the people are still living so no names.

I'd like to find the married names of two sisters. The marriages most likely took place in the 1950-70 period, more than likely in Victoria or NSW.

I have the sister's first names, maiden name, parent's names and their husband's first name.

For a similar NZ marriage I would use either the NZSG Marriages CD 1856-1956 or the NZ Marriages Microfiche 1956-1990 to find the spouses.

How would I do the same thing for an Australian marriage. Is it something I can do from NZ. Or is it the kind of thing I request a look-up for on the Australia board.

Happy to PM details if someone can help.

Regards
Beg

NSW BDM Online Historical Indexes have marriage registrations up to 1960.

Hello Leanne,

I did have a look earlier but no joy.

Do Aussie library's have BDM microfiche?

sometime the best way to track down recents that records aren't available for is the newspapers.  Wedding reports or birth of children, all sort of things crop up.

so try  trove.nla.gov.au
Furmston, Demo, Mohr, Atkinson, Lindsay, Grieve, McInroy,Huntingford, Carey, Hinds or Hindz, Noad, Swan,

Hello Carol...

Thanks for the reply.

Agreed that Trove is an amazing resource but unfortunately it doesn't seem to extend past the mid-1950's. Bit of a nuisance cos I'm guessing the two sisters were born in the mid to late 30's so likely marriages would be late 1950's onwards.

EDIT: One sister (the younger?) was born 11 Aug 1934 and both were still unmarried in 1967 according to Naval Service Record at Archives Australia

I know the SMH archives extends to 1990 and have checked that with no luck. Do you know if there are any Melbourne or Victoria on-line newspaper archives that extend past the mid-1950's

Thanks very much
Beg

Hi Beg,

If you have a look here you can see what indexes are available for each state, their format and the years they cover.  All later records are closed to the general public.

I was at the State library Victoria  trying to find a death of recent years but I actually had a date to source my infomation so I was able to narrow my search,   papers at the State Libraries are on Microfiche/film

Im not sure how you can narrow down your choice.

Victorian deaths are availabe to 1985 with parents' names listed.

One step in the right direction would be to eliminate a death of the women before 1985 in Victoria by searching with parents' names.

Small help, but you never know. ::)

Any idea at all of where they may have lived?

Hi again...

I'm fairly sure both sisters were alive in 1999. They were mentioned on the death notice of their auntie, although that's not proof of anything. However neither of their names was followed by a "deceased" in brackets, which is the usual practice (at least here in NZ).

Their parents were in the Geelong area from the 1930's until their deaths c.1950.
The auntie was in Coffs Harbour until her death in 1999.

In 1957 the sisters were in Box Hill, east of Melbourne.
They had qualified as nurses in 1955.

In 1967 one of the sisters (the elder?) still lived in Box Hill.

In 1979 one of the sisters (the younger?) is still listed under her maiden name.

(I'm editing and searching as I go along so this is new information, not info I didn't bother mentioning when I started the thread :-)

Thanks again
Beg
