Pottle, Steve - Saskatchewan
« on: Tuesday 02 August 11 23:06 BST (UK) »
I have Steve Pottle married to Agnes Anna Roemer in 1913 in Melville, Saskatchewan.  They had 4 children.  One son, three daughters.  Agnes died in 1918 of flu.
Agnes was born on May 3, 1890 - don't know where.  Steve was bon in 1892 - don't know where.
Agnes dad is August F. Roemer.
This is all I know.
Thanks for any help.

Welcome to rootschat...sorry if this is overwhelming, but...

Steve Pottle may have been a home child ( perhaps lost a parent, or both and sent to work here)
He is a domestic in 1911/year of immigration 1901

I'll check the BHC database for more

Hello and a very warm welcome to RootsChat  :).

This looks like the family in the 1916 census .....

Stephan Pottle 24 b. Ontario? Farmer
Agnes 25 . USA immigrated 1910
Gordon 1 b. Saskatchewan
Florance 4/12 (4 months) b. Saskatchewan
Methodist for all
Racial origin for Stephan Irish

District of Mackenzie Saskatchewan
Township 37
Range 4
Meridian 2
Municipality L.Y.D. 706

While it does say this Stephan was born in Ontario, the info seems to generally match the info you have given us. Perhaps he didn't remember ? although he appears to have been old enough to do so when he came over. The 1921 Canadian census will be released in 2013 and that may clarify things. Meanwhile, other findings may clarify things as well. Ah, I see his brother's Attestation Form will help in this regard. Good.

Regards

From freeBMD at this link there is this marriage .....  http://www.freebmd.org.uk/

Stephen William Pottle to Agnes Elsie Todd
Edmonton Reg. District Vol. 3a p. 408
June quarter 1884.

This would match the parents of Mabel whose death record J.J. found. This couple may turn out to also be the parents of your Stephen. A few dots to connect first though.

From the 1901 census of England ...

The institution Stephen is in is the National Incorporated Waifs Association, otherwise known as Dr. Barnardo's Homes. This is a Home and School for little boys - Leopold House, 199 Burdett Road London E in Mile End Old Town (MEOT), Eastern. Stephen is listed as attending school.

The good news about him being in a Barnardo's Home is that records are available, although they are fairly expensive to purchase. They generally provide a good deal of information, however.
