Germans in Pembroke
« on: Wednesday 23 November 11 21:15 GMT (UK) »
I saw a reference to German families in Pembroke here recently but can't locate it now (I'm new).  It was started by monalisa and asked if there were any Germans in Pembroke in the l880s.  Well, my gt. gt. gt. grandparents came over from Germany in 1840 and, it seems, changed their name from Spille to Brickle (oddly).  They lived at first in Llanedy nr. Swansea in 1841 and ended up in the parish of St. Michael, Pembroke where they seemed to settle.  Wonder why Germans would emigrate to Wales and what sort of welcome they got?  They had at least 5 children so must have descendants locally I would have thought.  Sorry if I'm going over old ground.

The Brickle Family is still in Pembroke town and area. What is interesting is that whilst there was a Brickle family already here from Germany another appear to arrive later in the century. Family members served in UK forces W.W. 1 and 2.
We also of course have at least 3 strong italian connections, one family of which arrive in East back Pembroke circa 1860.
There is a further strong German 20th century connection also in the town.

We have as far as I have found in my research ;
4 German serviceman were buried here for a time during W.W. 2,
1 ex German submariner P.O.W. who made his home here after returning from Canada and is buried at Pembroke St Michael Cemetery.
There are a number of German~Pembroke marriages listed in my transcripts of all the parish registers of Bapt/Mrge/Burial at Pembroke St Mary & St Michael 1711 to the 1950's.

I'm sure others can add to my list above.

In the late 18th and early 19th we have French and African connections

Thanks for the welcome and replies.  It's certainly given me a lot to digest and, inevitably, raised even more questions.  I read somewhere that lots of men fled Germany in the 1840s to escape conscription into the army, so that's one theory.

I can feel a holiday in Pembroke coming on!
