Trying to find a civil marriage record
« on: Monday 28 November 11 02:41 GMT (UK) »
I have a copy of my great grandparents Roman Catholic marriage, from the Irish family History Foundation web site.  The web site only has their church marriage record, not the civil marriage record. I also have checked the family search.org & mayo family history centres web sites, no civil marriage record there either.
Here is the marriage information for my great grandparents.

John Murphy married Mary Cronnolly, yes Cronnolly not Connolly, February 22, 1872 in the Killasser Roman Catholic Church. Witnesses were Bernard O'Hara & Catherine Cronnolly.
I have found my great grandparents in both the 1901 & 1911 census, living in Townland : Treanrevagh, Parish: Killasser.

I'm hoping some one can help me find their civil marriage, which hopefully will list their parents names, because the church marriage record doesn't.

have you tried any of the suggestions mentioned on your topic on the  IrelandGenealogy group on Facebook ?

Have you seen the parish record or just a transcription ?

If the surname can be confirmed the there are a relatively small number of Cronnolly registrations in the district of Swineford during civil records that might be worth following up - Cronnolly - Swineford  (24 births, 7 marriages, 8 deaths)

Shane,
What I saw was a transcription from the original marriage church record. I live in the US,so I can't got check the civil marriage records at GRO. I looked at the link to the Cronnolly civil BMD records that you gave, it is the family search web site which I have looked at.  I don't know if any of those Cronnollys are related to my great grandmother.

The Online BMD Index is based on the Index Books in the GRO, so they should be the same, but one possibility is that a mistake was made transcribing the BMD Index on familysearch - so it might be worth asking the GRO to do a search for you in case their original index books show some entries missed off the online index.

There's no facility for the public to view the actual marriage records in the GRO research room, you have to order certs to see the details - all searching has to be done through the index.

In the meantime following up some of those other Cronnolly records in the area might be worthwhile, since it's such a rare surname they could easily turn out to be connected, and there could be clues in addresses,  witness to marriages etc

Hello Suzygirl,

It must be very frustrating for you.

There is a published tree which has William Cronnolly and Bridget Stephens as Mary's parents. Evidence is not given however.

There are several children given for this family:
William (1848); Catherine (1850); Thomas (1853-1937); Mary (1854); James (1856)

1901:
Bridget 89 yrs with son Thomas in Magheraboy.
James Cronnlly and wife Catherine are in Knockfadda

There are some baptisms to a James and Catherine O'Hara Cronnolly which may be a further link to your Mary (O'Hara witness to marriage).

Although most Cronnolly references are in the general area, not all are specific to a certain area so relationships cannot be assumed.

There are Cronnollys in the area today. Killasser has a website: http://www.killasser.com/   Have you tried there?

regards
heywood

Hi Heywood,
Thanks for your reply.  Yes this search is very frustrating. The Cronnolly family tree that you saw on Ancestry or Roots web is mine. The information I put there about Mary Cronnolly's parents & siblings, isn't conclusive. There are three Mary Cronnolly's born in the time period that I think my great grand mother may have been born, which is 1837-1857. One  Mary is born in 1850, the other two in 1854 & 1856, all in the Killasser Roman Catholic Church. Going thru a process of elimination, I found out that the Mary Cronnolly that was born in 1856, married a man named James Kenny, he isn't my great grand father. The Mary Cronnolly born in 1850, I can't find a marriage or death on, so far. Also the Mary born in 1850, her last name is spelled Clonnolly in the index, which I think is a typo mistake. I also will check the immigration records for this Mary.
Life would be easier if I could find my great grand parents civil marriage record.

Suzygirl1,
As Shane suggested, it may be worth asking the GRO to do a search for you.  However, the marriage may not have been registered at all.  One of my aunts who had been married in her local catholic church in County Mayo on 10th November 1945 was seriously inconvenienced when she claimed her state retirement pension.  No record of her marriage could be found.  It seems that the priest had not informed the civil authorities about the marriage and had not recorded it in the parish records either.
[If you do find the civil record of the marriage, it will show the names of the two fathers but not the names of the mothers.]

might i suggest you buy the other 10 records of birth-baptisms to couple for 20 euros .
search for murphy births in mayo father john -+ 10 years hit advanced button but in mothers surname cronnolly theres 10 records .
it may well be 5 births and 5 baptisms for same five kids but youd be hoping that either murphy or cronnolly family members are godparents .
hopefully youll get a less common name to work from .
