Money Conversion
« on: Saturday 31 December 11 15:56 GMT (UK) »
anyone know what £16,000.00 in 1879 would equate to now?

just found a family bankruptcy and he owed that much so wondering just how much it would have been in "our" times.

Thanks  :)

Hi Ruth,

you can find some topics on Value of Old Money in the
RootsChat Reference => Lexicon (click here)
(Tip: click on a category - on the right - for related topics)

Some of the discussions are interesting, as they also raise the question of value "compared to what ?" - price of bread ?, beer ? housing ? wages ? etc.

regards,
Bob

To give a simple answer, in 1880, £16,000 0s 0d would have the same spending worth of 2005's £772,960.00. http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/currency/
