Uggy, when you say:

To sancti.

Then I get stuck I can't go further foreward than that.

By forward, do you mean back to George Martin and Mary Brown's family or forward to their children and descendants?

It is just that you mentioned at the start a problem going back before the start of official registration in Scotland - pre 1855, and Flora McLean and Buckie etc. Made me think it might the generation back you were trying to move to.

We can help going back and forward - just need to understand which way you want to go first!

Hi Uggy,
It can certainly be very frustrating when you start out searching for your ancestors until you learn the ropes.  Thankfully all the folks on this forum are very helpful and it doesn't take long to find your way.  We all have access to different websites and can usually help out from different sources.  Here's what I found on the family in the way of census:
Note: all family mbrs are born in Carstairs unless otherwise stated

1851: Living at School House, Carstairs
Thomas Martin, aged 30, Tile Burner
           Mary aged 23
           George aged 2
           John aged 1
Margaret Gray aged 12, House Servant

1861: Living at Village of Carstairs
Thomas Martin aged 40, Coalman (Lab)
          Mary aged 33
         George aged 12
         John aged 11
         Janet aged 9
         Agnes aged 7
         Thomas aged 5
         Mary Ann aged 3
         Mary aged 1

1871: Living at Northside Row, Carstairs
Thomas aged 54 Engine Fetter Apertant Raily (Engine Fitter at Railway?)
          Mary aged 43
George aged 22 Feresnan (loco Engin East) (I think he's a fireman at railway?)
John aged 21 Brooksman (raily) ( Looks like a Brakesman at Railway?)
          Marrion aged 11, Scholar
          William aged 8, Scholar
          Edward aged 6, Scholar
          Helen aged 3
          Eliza Griffith Martin, 6 mths

1881: Living at Lanark & Edinburgh? (parish of Carstairs)
Thomas Martin aged 60, Railway Waggon Examiner
          Mary G aged 53
          William aged 19, Loco Fireman
          Edward aged 17, Waggon Greaser
          Elizabeth aged 10, Scholar
Andrew Paterson aged 30, Lodger, b Broughton, Peebleshire, Railway Waggon Examiner

1891: Living at Lanark Rd, Carstairs
          Thomas aged 70, Sub Postmaster
          Mary G aged 63
          William aged 28, Railway Platelayer
Edward aged 26, Railway Engine Driver

1901: Living at Post Office Carstairs
          Mary Martin, Head, aged 73
Mary A aged 43, Sub Post Mistress
Elizabeth G aged 30, Rural Auxiliary Post Woman
          William aged 38, Railway Surfaceman
Thomas aged 18, Grandson, b Carstairs, Railway Engine Fitter (apprentice)

Likely marriage on IGI family search:
Thomas Martin and Mary Gardner in Carstairs 07 Jul 1848

Possible birth on IGI family search:
Thomas Martin b 03 May 1820 Carstairs
Thomas Martin christened 07 May 1820
Son of George Martin & Agnes Donald

It appears that Thomas has died sometime btwn 1891 & 1901 and as he lived in Carstairs all his long life it's possible he can be found on ScotsP within this time frame in the parish of Carstairs thus confirming his parents.

There are trees posted on the Anc.com site with photos also for this family. Hope this helps,

Sage.

In addition:
likely death date for Geo Martin b 1849 from the info I am seeing
16 Jan 1925 aged 76

To ev.
Thanks for your help. I have found some information. I found the name of THOMAS MARTIN
born abt 1817 married to MARY GARDINER born abt 1853. I could not find their mother and father.
Also found JAMES BROWN married to HELEN YOUNG no date of birth and also unable to find mother and father. Even if I had the correct census it seems very difficult to find the correct information.
If anyone has any data it would be a great help. Thank you.

UGGY

Uggy  :)

"I found the name of THOMAS MARTIN
born abt 1817 married to MARY GARDINER born abt 1853"

Are you sure about those dates ?

Scotlandspeople website has -

Thomas Martin death 1898 Carstairs Lanark , born c1820

Mary Martin(other surname GARDNER) death 1902 Carstairs Lanark , born c1827

That would seem to match with the Census information that Sage has found
